Why I recommend "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth"

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth

by Henci Goer

This book tells you the things about birth interventions that your OB and childbirth class do not. It is certainly biased about a totally intervention-free delivery, but is honest and upfront about its biases. It is also good because it tells you how to avoid interventions, how to minimize them, and which ones to allow if you’re going to have one. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to even attempt a natural delivery. Note, Lamaze classes do not support natural childbirth (at least mine doesn’t).

A story about "1000 Best Baby Bargains"

1000 Best Baby Bargains

by Kimberly Danger

Again, I found that Baby Bargains was much superior to this book. I found that this book was really more of an advertisement for the author’s website (which also isn’t that hot). If you’re going to buy one baby gear book, definitely pick up baby bargains instead. This one tells you helpful pointers to save money – like breastfeeding over using formula…DUH.

A story about "What to Expect When You're Expecting, Third Edition"

What to Expect When You're Expecting, Third Edition

by Heidi Murkoff

There are much better ones out there. I like The Pregnancy Book by the Seares better. This book seems really random to me. But overall, the information is good, and some people automatically assume this book is the pregnancy bible. If the choice is to read nothing, or to read What to Expect, then at least read this book.

A story about "Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, 8th Edition (Best Baby Products)"

Consumer Reports Best Baby Products, 8th Edition (Best Baby Products)

by Editors of Consumer Reports

This book was kind of a waste because it only discussed products generally – no specific examples. Not exactly helpful in a marketplace of bazillions of baby products with no real way to know what to get/what is best/what is a waste of money when the discussion stays general. “You need a car seat that hasn’t been recalled.” Duh.

A story about "Bel Canto"

Bel Canto

by Ann Patchett

I enjoyed the book as a pleasure read even though I thought the ending was fairly abrupt, needed work, was somewhat unbelievable, and failed to link the entire story with the ultimate ending. I put the book down, thinking, “That was pretty good, but, huh???”

A story about "Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Revised Edition)"

I highly recommend it for all women – even those not trying to get pregnant. There is a lot of good info in here that everyone should know but for some reason is not taught in school.

A story about "The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy"

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy

by Vicki Iovine

I actually liked this book. Most of the other pregnancy books are on the stuffy side, while this book was a more enjoyable read. Everyone has an opinion, so just ignore the opinionated parts. Some parts are a little bit silly, but if you have a sense of humor, this is a good book for you.
