A review of "Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This memoir was compelling, but I didn’t like the way it was written. It’s clear that his experiences have really affected his life, but his tone at times seemed overly sentimental. And there were many cases where his connections between his past and his present were tenuous at best.
However, all in all—good plot, not so good writing. I’m glad I borrowed it from a friend instead of shelling out money for it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Finally! I finished rereading it today. It took me so long because I refused to read it anywhere but the gym (in an effort to force me to go to the gym more often) After a two month hiatus, I finally went the gym, climbed on the elliptical, and read my heart out. All I have to say is it was as good the second time as it was the first.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really like the way Kingston weaves together reality, dreams, and stories. The White Tigers and Shaman sections are especially good at this. It makes for a thought provoking book, and it really gave me a lot to mull over. The juxtaposition of the woman warrior figure and the Chinese woman as portrayed in the novel was really interesting. All in all, a good satisfying read.

The first section of the novel, No Name Woman, seems to be anthologized in every freshman english reader ever.

A story about "Star Trek Deep Space Nine - The Complete First Season" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

For a long time I though Deep Space Nine was never really good until the Dominion war started at the end of the third season. However, I’ve been rewatching the first season on dvd, and I’m starting to rethink this. Right from the beginning, the writers provide well-developed plots that really focus on the development of the characters. The first episode, “The Emissary,” explains the events Commander Cisko’s past, but it also forces him to explain why he is the way he is. The following episodes highlight a continuing tension between Starfleet and the Bajorans, and it presents what seems to me to be a complex picture of the a people rebuilding their civilzation from scratch. It’s more than just a show about a species of the week from the Gamma Quadrant. Deep Space Nine is often treated like the bastard child of Star Trek shows, but I don’t think people often give it a chance; it’s a quality show. with good, well-developed characters and interesting plots.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I can’t believe I’ve gone through some twenty odd years of life without reading this. Well, my error has been corrected. It’s a highly amusing and very clever book, one that I’ll definitely reread at some point in the future.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This isn’t Roxette’s best album. In fact, I think I like some of the songs because they’re so bad (i.e. Jefferson). However, after listening to it several times, I found that the album does have its merits (again, the so bad it’s good thing is kind of fun)and it does have some good tracks (It Takes You No Time to Get Here is my favorite). However, I’ve been a fan of Roxette since Look Sharp was released, so I’ll pretty much listen to just about anything they put out

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I did find the premise intriguing. If only his writing didn’t suck. Maybe I’m just a literature snob, but Dan Brown’s writing style is just generic. I felt like I could have been reading at least a thousand other books, and this was evident from the very first page.

And the ending! Dan Brown is a tease. He builds up to a big ending and it just falls flat. Does he figure the rest of the plot is enough to get him by? I’m told his other novels have less than stellar conclusions as well.

By no means is this the worst book I’ve ever read. It is kind of nice for light reading when my brain wants to take an intellectual vacation.

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you’re stressed out (like I am right now)then this is your movie. It’s really relaxing to watch. It’s just a simple sweet movie. I think I got a little caught up in Taeko’s love for the country. Maybe that’s why it was so relaxing to watch. Now, it’s back to the grind.
