A story about "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" — 5 years ago

Another fantastic book by Malcolm Gladwell.

I tried out the Pepsi/Coke challenge with my wife and it was right on the money.

The fact that so many CEOs are over 6 feet tall is weird!

A story about "In the Beginning...was the Command Line" — 5 years ago

A pretty basic review… I like Stephenson’s writing, but the topic that he covers uses dated information.

(Talking about the computer industry in 2000? Gasp!)

I liked the ‘Unix Philosophy’ better.

I wouldn’t trust Jefferson. He paid a muckraker journalist named Calendar to write disparaging (untrue) things about his ‘friend’ John Adams.

When later confronted about it by Adams, Jefferson did not admit to it (even though there was solid evidence that he was lying)

According to the author, he had convinced himself that he wasn’t in league with Calendar.

Calendar was also the person who broke the story that Jefferson slept with one of his slaves…

You reap what you sow!

This is a subject that I’ve spent some time reading up on.

Unfortunately, I’m not enough of an expert to be able to follow the logic of this book without some diagrams.

And for some reason, diagrams aren’t available for audiobooks :)

A story about "Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software" — 4 years ago

I borrowed this book from the UNC library along with ‘No Logo’ and ‘Success of Open Source’.

I had worked my way through those two books, but ignored this one.

Eventually, I decided if I checked this book out, I should make an attempt to read it.

I was done with it in a couple of sittings.

A pretty good read.

A story about "No Logo: No Space, No Choice, No Jobs" — 4 years ago

This book is way against our corporate masters.

I’d say that one of Schlosser’s books (Fast Food Nation or Reefer Madness) will give you the same moral:

“If the market only strives for efficiency then humans somewhere will pay the price.”

With that said, I liked reading about struggles against Nike. It reminded me of being back in college.

A story about "Linked: How Everything Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means" — 4 years ago

Pretty good.

I love reading about accessible abstract ways of interpreting all sorts of phenomena.

A story about "The Success of Open Source" — 4 years ago

I wanted to read this book since I work at Red Hat.

The book isn’t really a ‘rah-rah-rah!’ open source companies, but it does give me some comfort that Red Hat will stick around.

A story about "The Art of UNIX Programming" — 4 years ago

A pretty handy ‘starter’ guide to Unix programming.

I’m no master, but the advice in this book seems sound.

Plus, it gives me some basis for inevitable technical arguments that I occasionally get into.
