A story about "Hugh Fearlessly Eats It All: Dispatches from the Gastronomic Frontline" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

From Amazon.co.uk:

Synopsis
For almost two decades, ‘Hugh Fearlessly-Eatsitall’ has been writing about food in all its guises. To some, his concept of ‘good eating’ might seem a bit skewed – he’d always bypass a McBurger in favour of a squirrel sandwich, and make a detour for fresh road kill – but to others he is a shining and shaggy beacon of good sense in a food world gone mad. Armed with a broad mind, a quick wit and a ready appetite, Hugh covers almost every area of global food culture. Whether singing the praises of offal; debunking Colonel Sanders and Dr. Atkins; playing ‘poisson roulette’ with the deadly fugu fish in Tokyo; pondering the moral inconsistency of those who condemn fox hunting for its cruelty while happily tucking into factory-farmed chicken; fishing for marlin in Kenya, trout in Chile and barracuda in the Bahamas; analysing the tea-dunking qualities of some classic British biscuits; contemplating why if piglets are destined for the pot, why aren’t puppies; or reminding us that a reindeer isn’t just for Christmas, but tasty all year round, Hugh has an unerring ability to entertain and provoke.

A bible study thinly hidden in a sci-fi novel — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

C S Lewis continues his obsession with Christianity. Basically it’s the Garden of Eden, Eve, the serpent and temptation and knowledge all wrapped up as Venus, the sole female inhabitant of Venus, a bad man – Weston – from C S Lewis’ previous “sci-fi” work Out of the Silent Planet, and his education of that female, respectively.

The main character Randsom is the goodie-goodie guy who is chosen by “God” and transported to Venus – Perelandra – to be Eve’s saviour from devil possessed Weston. Initally Randsom is too weak intellectually to intervene in Eve’s “bad” education and rather extraordinarily encouraged by God to go and physically murder Weston! Apparently that’s ok since its in “God’s” name!

Once Weston is eradicated, “Adam” comes on the scene and meets “Eve” everything is hunky-dory and just before Randsom is transported back to Earth, he is told that Earth will have its population and I guess all life eradicated (cleansed) eventually by the Perelandrians.

And that’s also apparently ok too!

The book is filled with circular, verbose dialogue possibly normal for the Forties when Perelandra was written. I find Randsom annoyingly unintellectual and weak, his actions are weak, and the outcome of the whole book is so gloomy.

It's fine if you like that sort of thing... — 1 year ago

I love reading good science fiction. I’m not religious at all. So my conclusion of C S Lewis’ work is that it is relatively poor sci-fi. Probably good in its time but it doesn’t stand up against contemporary sci-fi. The God theme…hmm…rather spoiled things further.

I read from the book jacket of a Chronicles of Narnia compendium that JRR Tolkien met with CS Lewis in a writer’s club known as the Inklings. I am surprised therefore that Tolkien’s brilliance in fantasy fiction didn’t affect Lewis more.

I will read the remaining books in the trilogy but I do not expect much – at least the Chronicles had Narnia! Perhaps this is an admission that I like fantasy over science :)

A story about "Green Wing" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Funky hospital-based sketch-comedy-drama type show. (from IMDB).

From the award-winning team behind Smack the Pony comes Green Wing, the new comedy series that’s part soap opera, part drama – but all surreal and innovative. Set in a hospital, despite a general lack of medical attention, Green Wing follows new surgical registrar Dr Caroline Todd through her first day at work and beyond, starting out as she means to go on – dishevelled and under-deodorised having spent the night in her car. Among the bizarre cast of characters, who are the good guys and who are the bad guys – and what sort of Guy is Guy Secretan, the smooth talking anaesthetist? (From IMDB).

WORTH CONSUMING!

A really detailed, well written and researched book that will make you look at the Victorian house with new insight.

The book has a comprehensive bibliography at the end which I look at as a future reading list.

Hmm... — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed CS Lewis’ other Narnia stories but this one was a little too on the religious side to be comfortable.

Don’t get me wrong when I started reading the Chronicles I did know about the religious element. And my motivation for reading them was that these were books I should have read whilst a little kid.

I guess I’m just not religious or spiritual – so it didn’t work for me. If I had kids I probably wouldn’t read this particular story to them – let Narnia live on for them I say!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I am very ashamed to say I haven’t read any of C S Lewis’ books. Now with the film in the cinemas, I am determined to read the book before I go!
