Exceeds expectations — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was one of those movies I expected to be bad. It was, in the most perfect ways possible, making it great!

Its got The Rock, the busty scientist sister, the roguish but hansom hero, and an incompetent but well-trained squad of soldiers.

The final fight sequence was short but well done. Good tension, nice wire-work and an excellent finale.

Kids Movie — 2 years ago

Great for the heavy use of real-action special effects, and the computer-generated effects when appropriate. Beyond that, its a kids movie, for kids.

Ow! My eyes! — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I knew this movie was going to be bad, but not that bad. It reached new levels of appalling, so much so that I don’t know how to properly qualify it.

Anyhow, it was in 3-D, which was quite novel, even though the film was quite flat in general (except for the boobies, but they didn’t really pop out at you in that way). For being a porno, there wasn’t that much sex, though. Mostly it was switching from bizarre non-sequitur to bizarre non-sequitur.

It started out with three trojan soldiers coming off the beach looking for Troy. Then there was this guy falling out of a plane into a pool. Oh, and one of the trojan soldiers was wearing a pink bunny costume. Then later on the other two trojan soldiers were dressed up as big-bird and some swamp creature.

The sex scenes were disappointingly short, and only one really used the 3-D to any effect when the cum-shot came right at you. Brilliant!

Oh, and the director was really, really annoying.

After the movie my eyes were all manner of messed up due to the glasses. Bleh.

Don’t go see this movie, really.

Blue Mars — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

About one quarter of the way into Blue Mars I was afraid I was going to be disappointed. There was extensive talk of politics, economy, and related government building activities that just weren’t very gripping. While the pace and tone of the reading matched the section’s main character’s mood, it was almost too much.

Fortunately things picked up from there and the book finished stronger than I anticipated. One character’s problem was resolved better than expected, and another’s was left unresolved. The book closed on notes of joy and sadness, the dawning of a golden age combined with the decline of its principal architects.

Why I recommend "Startide Rising (The Uplift Saga, Book 2)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It has dolphins.

Dolphins that talk!

Dolphins that talk and fly spaceships!

Just Barely — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Peter Jackson’s King Kong just barely qualified for the ‘worth it’ button. Most of the scenes were simply too long and a few were just gratuitous (especially what happened to the guys who fell down the chasm on the log).

The special effects looked great, though.

Why I recommend "War of the Worlds (Widescreen Edition)" — 4 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

You like incompetent fathers and annoying little girls who need to be slapped.

The best part of this movie was the bodies floating down the river when the little girl was trying to find a place to hide so she could pee.

How "Stealth (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)" changed my life — 4 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I had very low expectations for Stealth, but I was wrong. I planned to find the movie so bad it was funny, but War of the Worlds beat it!

The plane was supposed to be super-smart but ended up dumb as a rock. Shots of Jessica Alba’s ass in tight pants didn’t help (but she is a great shot with the ‘wave the gun around’ technique) nor did the love story nor the super awesome special effects.

I do want a refueling zeppelin, though.

A story about "We ♥ Katamari" — 4 years ago

I bought this at OOPSLA and it was waiting for me on my desk when I returned. The manual is awesome. Instead of screenshots there’s a bunch of crayonish art. The first eight pages are ‘how to roll the Katamari’ and only have a handful of words with large graphics. Beautiful!

A story about "Slant" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Awesome battling coolness. But that’s not really what the book is about.

Its really about a future so stressful that people who can’t get their brains fixed go nutz. Then one of the nutz strikes back!
