Just couldn't get into these characters — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

People have recommended this book to me, and they’re people who usually recommend good books. But this is one of the few books I’ve ever stopped reading half-way through. I couldn’t connect with the characters. I disliked how the point of view shifted all the time, frequently to yet another new character. I stopped reading when I realized I dreaded picking it up. It just didn’t give me characters I cared about or wanted to follow.

A review of "the sad thing about happiness" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Although the cover flap describes this novel as a “wry comedy,” I found it to be more poignant than flat-out funny. The premise is a good one: Heroine Maggie takes a magazine quiz that tells her that she has 3 months to live. The one answer that would change the result is her response to whether she is currently happy. So, Maggie ponders what happiness is, and sets out to explore happiness in her life… which leads to interesting and unexpected results. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and interesting reflections along the way.

Not as sappy as you think it will be — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I started this, thinking it was going to be sickly sentimental … but the story of a woman returning to her riding life appealed to me, having grown up around horses. In any event, I found I enjoyed this book more than I though I would. It took some unusual turns and was better than I expected.

Don't bother! — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This was horrible. Clearly Fielding thought she was being clever with this story, which was supposed to be “taut suspense.” It was junk. It’ll be the last I read from this author.

Why I gave up consuming "Jury Duty" — 3 years ago

Predictable story-line, uni-dimensional characters, romance between unlikely jurors, of course. Not worth the time at all.

A story about "Bet Me" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Cute, witty girl-meets-boy story. A guy who accepts her for who she is, doesn’t mind that she’s not thin, and feeds her Krispy Kreme doughnuts as foreplay? Clearly fiction, but fun fiction.

A story about "Dead Man's Bones (China Bayles Mystery)" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Disappointing and dry, with an all too obvious plot. Her earlier novels seemed more entertaining.

A story about "Forcing Amaryllis" — 3 years ago

Interesting premise, especially juror consultant as heroine. But execution of premise wasn’t great. Average writing, average plot.

Interesting, entertaining. Rated 7 out of 10.

A story about "The Line of Beauty: A Novel" — 3 years ago

Same thought as the other reviewer…beautifully written, but I had to fight the urge to stop reading. I can only figure that the Booker Prize here was based on the fact that every sentence was gorgeous, even if the story line was rather weak.
