A story about "Deep Wizardry: The Second Book in the Young Wizards Series" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Nina and Kit get dragged in over their heads by a hasty promise. A lot of sea life; Duane handles things smoothly, introducing fine details intriguingly. While it feels a bit like a retread, the strong non-human support makes it its own book.

A story about "How Buildings Learn: What Happens After They're Built" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The book is well written and littered with strong examples (like the cover images). It’s a bit polemical—the author has a vision for architecture that’s not current practice—but argues it well. (I’m sympathetic to the author, due to socialization…) It’s a great secondary book; I read a chapter or two between other books.

A story about "A Tapestry of Lions (Cheysuli)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The book does what it intends; after 50+ years, the prophecy ends. There were some unexpected twists (particularly regarding the witch) and the finale was strong.

As with the last book, the main character is much less sympathetic than the early book’s characters. (Better stated, is filled with angst and bitterness that I found less appealing.)

A story about "Song of Homana (Cheysuli)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Picks up where the last left off, but the main Character is Carillion. A lot takes place; war, contesting with the ilhini… Carillion’s a driven man and this book is filled with events.

The world is vibrant, and even victory comes at a cost.

A story about "Way Station (SF Collector's Edition)" — 4 years ago

There’s a lot of cool concepts packed tightly. It’s a different experience than the huge 12 book series; the plots and flashbacks are rapid and drive the story quickly. Great classic SF.

A story about "Shapechangers (Cheysuli)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A good introduction to the world of the Cheysuli. Alix is a very attractive protagonist; a part of many different worlds, but with enough doubt and honesty to reveal the many different sides of the dispute.

A warning: The ending’s not happy-bright.

A story about "Convergence: Book One of The Blending" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Quite enjoyable. This is clearly the first of many books; if you want a firm ending, it’s not here. Well written, good characters, though a few scenes shown twice (2 viewpoints) are somewhat annoying. It left me eager to read more of the series.

A story about "The Far Side of Forever" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The beginning had me concerned, but the characters become solid. Some characters remain a bit thin, some of the persistant cluelessness seems forced, but the plot’s a good one. Resolves handily. Author develops skills that make later books (like the Blending) more impressive.

A story about "To Die In Italbar" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is actually 2 books. The first is To Die in Italbar, which was an OK book. It’s sci-fi without any time spent on the tech end. The characters were all a bit flat, and weren’t really people I’d look fot.

The second novella, A Dark Travelling, is more to my taste. Quirky teen characters who must save the worlds, with a trans-dimensional family network and the like. The climax was quite solid.

A story about "Rogue Emperor: A Novel of the Chronoplane Wars (Kilian, Crawford, Chronoplane Wars Trilogy.)" — 4 years ago

A chronoplanes novel; it works relatively well alongside the other novels in the series. Rome feels well done, but I’m no expert—he could have been throwing around faux latin for all I know.

Pierce is still “ubercool” (like a high level character in many systems), and still a bit difficult to empathize with. Interesting reiteration of some stuff touched on in Empire of Time.
