A story about "A Million Little Pieces"

I don’t read much, but I needed something to pass the time.

The cover of this book got my attention, and although I know I shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, who can’t help it? When I began reading it, I was stunned. The tone, the structure, the diction, and the premise amazed me. I read as much of it as I could while I was there, and I decided to buy it (paperback for $0.75). I didn’t find out until a few months later that it was one of the books Oprah recommends, and that it is sold in stores with the Oprah sticker at about $12.

I just finished reading it earlier today, and I highly recommend it. It is strong when you expect weakness, and it is beautiful when you expect horror. The book provides a window into a world of addiction that many don’t understand, and it brings to it a sense of humanity.

Why I like people who have consumed "Darna"

Darna

by Mars Ravelo

18 years ago, my father announced that I would be named “Darna” after the Filipina superheroine equivalent of Wonder Woman. Naturally, all the relatives disagreed with his desires, and it caused a huge argument. So when I was born, my mom changed my name to Dariane. But the idiots who wrote my name for my birth certificate named me “Doriana.” To counter this mistake, my parents immediately changed it to what it was supposed to be originally, which is the name I am proud to have today. Just an interesting little tidbit.

And it’s rare to find anyone here who knows who Darna is.

P.S. When I got glasses as a kid, my dad would tease me and call me Narda.
