i’m disturbed by what @ times seems like a creed-less emerging church (and what almost always seems like creedless mainlines). the title embodies my feelings, and i wanted to hear what sayers had to say. the first few chapters are awesome; the last few are more doctrinal and less what i was looking for, but they’re good nonetheless.

easily accessible primer; good for catechumenates, but not that informative for anyone who has been araound the altar for a while.

pretty good practical ideas on being “cheap” from a xtian perspective. one was: “use ebay.”

i sold the book immediately.

rec. from the old beer & bull guys of essex, mass. wonderful story of a whiskey priest dealing w/ guilt and fear in the face of his impending death.

funny in a confederacy of dunces way, probably even funnier. not one of my all timers, though.

picked up on word of a bookseller i trust, but got bored w/ it. lost of princeton anecdotes, but i never caught the story—plus, i could never pronounce the freakin’ book!

why’d a tenured english professor @ syracuse decide to “prove up” as a salmon fisherman? probably interesting, but i didn’t have the time for it.

a man watches a suicide and then becomes obsessed w/ the life of the woman who drowned herself. enjoyed writing immensely, but got graphic in parts for no reason, and i got bored w/ that. it’s probably a victim of my growing inability to read fiction anymore.

a history of the oxford movement and what followed. the echoes of that movement are what drew me to the episcopal church.

saw the author on charlie rose. sounded not nuts. would’ve been a good book, but who’s got the time?
