NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Read this after a friend of mine said it was her favourite book a couple years back. Kept waiting for it to pick up and get good, but it never did. Haynes’s writing style is quite a mouthful, peppered with awkward figurative language throughout. After the halfway point I was reading just to finish it, indignant at having spent so much time reading the first half.

WORTH CONSUMING!

made me re-realize just how messy and unperfect life is, how incredibly unpredictable and beautiful, a rich and colourful mess full of the unexpected: bliss and grief and everything in between. life in this world isn’t going to be perfect so you may as well appreciate the messiness of life. stand in the rain for once instead of running away, because the road keeps going on and the clouds will always be there, just like the sun will always hang overhead.

don’t particularly agree with the symbolism implied with the apple: fall of man = good? but overall, an inspiration.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

certain scenes were lovely, and the key actors did a good job. it followed the book but seemed disjointed and the depth of the connection between heathcliff and catherine was not as well done as it could have been. portrayed (somewhat understandablly, i suppose) as just a love story when there’s more to their story than just earthly love – their souls are one, after all. would have been utterly confusing had i not already read the book.
