Clerks is awesome — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was the movie that lead me to the genius that is Kevin Smith. This was his first movie and I think it’s the second best movie he has ever made. This is one of the comedies that echo truth that exists in you that you can only understand if you have actually worked as a convenience store clerk. The lead character Dante Hicks has to deal with irate customers, a girlfriend that has issues with his stature in life, an nymphomatic ex-girlfriend, and a best friend that almost wants to see him fail.

This is one of the ultimate slacker comedies. I was first aware of because of an article in Details magazine hailing it as one the latest and greatest independent films released. I went out to Suncoast Video (do those even exist anymore?) and purchased the VHS tape for 29.99 and went home and immediately popped it in the video tape.

This is one the best movie for one liners that you repeat to your friends. This is one of the movies where either you get it or you don’t. It’s one of the greatest slacker comedies made. If you haven’t seen this movie, stop what you are doing and go out and get it.

I assure you this post is closed.

The Toy — 1 year ago

When I was a kid I loved the movie The Toy. In this movie Richard Pryor is a toy for a rich man’s (Jackie Gleason) son. I think what I enjoyed best as a child is seeing all the toys the kid had, and I thought it would be awesome to hand out with the guy from Superman 2. Out of Richard Pryor movies that I enjoy as an adult this isn’t at the top of my list. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoy it, but I prefer Brewster’s Millions more.

I can say that this is a movie you should share with your pre-teen child. If they enjoy it as much as I did it would be a nice change of pace for viewing with them. You can watch along with them, they might not get all of the humor, but that’s for you to enjoy. It’s a movie that is actually takes a teenager to fully understand, but once again an enjoyment for a pre-teen to watch

Psycho — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

When I first saw American Psycho 2 at the store, I went this must be so cool – it’s a sequel to American Psycho how could it be bad. Well I wouldn’t say it’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen, it’s not a worthy successor to the original. Mila Kunis (that chick from “That 70’s Show”) plays the lead killer in this movie. I’m sorry but she can come even within 10 percent of the quality that Christian Bale brought to the original movie. The movie kind of drags on and I can say that this style of movie is not the best vehicle for Kunis.

I’m sure they could have picked worse actresses so I won’t say the film is entirely her fault. The link between this movie and hte original is that Kunis’s character had a babysitter that dated and was attacked by Patrick Bateman in front of her. She stabs Bateman – fast forward a few years until she is in college. She studying criminology and eventually becomes a killer. Gone are the nuances of the original. The wondering if it was all in her head or real. This is a straight up B movie slasher film. It discredits the original by having the link and the title it shares.

Souless — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Soul Plane. I can’t say it’s a great movie. It’s really a bad movie that I found mildly amusing. I only purchased this because I got it used for 2.50 from the record exchange. This was one of those movies that I got because we made fun it of it for being one of the worst ideas for a movie. There was something from the trailer that I kept repeating to my friends, so when I saw it at the store at a cheap price I had to snag it.

It was something that may appeal to teenagers more then someone older then 22. Normal teenage American Pie stoneresque movie, I can’t say I’ve outgrown those types of movies. I loved Superbad, however watching this was painful and uninteresting.

Bill and Ted — 1 year ago

Bill and Ted, how do I love thee, let me count the ways.

1. You radically traveled through time in an amusing way that taught many a stoner about history.
2. You show us mid-westerners the love that is Circle K.
3. Every time a fan walks by a phone booth they try to dial their way to a different time.
4. Your philosophy is the future of human civilization.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent adventure was a movie that epitomizes the 80’s. It was another movie that again I didn’t manage to see in the theaters, but saw it on VHS the first time when it was still a new release. It’s a fun romp that fits in the traditional stoner comedy vein, yet ironically doesn’t show them doing any drugs. It seems they are just burn-outs. The plot line is they have to pass a history exam otherwise Ted (Keanu Reeves) has to go off to the military academy. In order to save the human race and keep them excellent, time travelers from the future come back and leave the boys a time machine to work on their history project. Hilarity then ensues.

Be excellent to one another.

A story about "American Psycho (Uncut Killer Collector's Edition)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

American Psycho is one of those few movies I wish desperately that I had seen in the theater. This was the film that showed me what Christian Bale is capable of. If you enjoy his performance in the Batman movies, this is where it all comes and stems from. Bale has always been great at getting inside of the character and showing what the character is made of.

The book that the movie was based on was meant to be a commentary on the 1980’s. The arrogance, hubris, and lack of empathy that the business world felt to the smaller man. The lead protagonist, Patrick Bateman (played by Bale), is a yuppie turned serial killer. He causing pain and suffering in different levels (real and imagined) to those around him. It’s a brilliant dark comedy (though I’m sure my grandparents wouldn’t find it the least bit funny).

American Psycho roles out and in the end you don’t know what is true, what is is imagined, and what is a lie. Did the whole film happen in his head? Was there a cover-up? Should he have fed the ATM the kitten? All in all it was a fun romp. I’ve owned it on VHS and DVD, and I’ll probably upgrade to Blu-Ray if I ever manage to bring myself to go all next gen.

I’d write more, but I have some videos I need to return.

Why I recommend "Postcards from the Edge" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Postcards from the Edge may be an older movie in a lot of ways (1990), it still has a modern feel. Some people will say 1990 is recent – until you take into realization that 17 year olds who were conceived at the time of this movie shooting will now be voting for president next year.

Carrie Fisher’s writing in the movie feels real. Real in the fact that human emotions feel the way they should, like you would feel if you were going through the same scenario’s. I don’t feel it glossed over emotions, it was unique and something that I can say was genuine film art.

So many films can give you that real emotion, that if you want something that can be truly touching without trying to make you cry, you must see this movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

While this movie does have some plot holes that exist even in the I can see two minutes ahead time frame. Over all it was an enjoyable experience. It is by no means a must see movie, but an entertaining diversion that you could watch.

A story about "Marie Antoinette" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I wanted to watch this, the idea had interested me. But while I can enjoy a wide range of movies from a myriad of genres – this has been one of the greatest wastes of my time.

I can’t fault the actors as much as the story and the directing of this film. The whole movie felt hollow and dragged on and on….and when you thought it was getting close to the end….dragged on and on some more.

I really would have thought more for the actors, directors and story.
