A story about "An Introduction to American Literature" — 5 years ago

A terse introduction to the literature of the United States for an Hispanic audience, mainly consisting of brief biographical sketches. Probably only of value as a curio to Borges enthusiasts.

A story about "Orbiter" — 5 years ago

Warren Ellis’s story is intriguing, and I’m cheered by the sense of optimism and wonder for space exploration. The characters, however, are thin and cliched, the plot resolves itself far too easily, and the story could have used some fleshing out. Artist Colleen Doran excels at detailed, full-page set pieces; people’s faces, on the other hand, tend to look slightly manic or crazed for some reason.

A story about "Selected Stories" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A short book of masterful stories about love and dreams from a former protege of Jorge Luis Borges. I’ll probably return to this book over and over; I can’t convey right now how much I loved reading this.

A story about "The Best of Myles (John F. Byrne Irish Literature Series)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A collection of satiric newspaper columns written by Flann O’Brien, sometimes inscrutable (I don’t read Latin or Irish), but usually hilarious. Still, I wish he had devoted more energy in his life to writing fiction of the same caliber as his first two novels.

Filled with charming illustrations by Alexander Calder.

A story about "Collected Poems in English and French (Beckett, Samuel)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I have to admit that I didn’t care much for Beckett’s poetry; on the other hand, I thought his translations were phenomenal. Since my French is rudimentary, I only compared his translations to the original French of Chamfort’s maxims, and Beckett’s renditions are strikingly creative.

A story about "Introducing Time (Introducing...(Totem))" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Fun overview of the confusing but fascinating topic of time.

A story about "Fancies and Goodnights (New York Review Books)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Sharp, ironic little tales by a onetime writer for Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Good stuff.

A story about "New Soviet Science Fiction (MacMillan's Best of Soviet Science Fiction)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Not a bad find, and some of the stories, as I’d expect from Russian storytelling, are very funny.

A story about "A Personal Anthology" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Borges’s collections of the stories, essays, and poems that he would like to be judged by. My list of favorites would differ, but this collection is still a joy to read.
