A story about "The Book of Fantasy" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The old edition that I own suffers from numerous typos , shabby design, and horrifying Maxfield Parrish-style cover art. The stories (chosen by Borges, Ocampo, and Casares), however, make this book a treasure.

A story about "Words in Commotion and Other Stories" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Out of print English translation from 1986 with an introduction by Italo Calvino. Some of the stories are rather unsettling. A nice companion to New Directions’ “Gogol’s Wife and Other Stories,” which is shorter but much easier to find.

A story about "The Invention of Morel (New York Review Books Classics)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I don’t know if it’s up to the praise that Borges gives it in the preface, but this is certainly a good read. Reminds me of Lem’s Solaris, with its protagonist’s love affair with a simulacrum. Seems like a college paper-writer’s dream novel.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Surprisingly easy to read and funny.

A story about "Giacomo Joyce" — 5 years ago

Probably not worthwhile except to diehard Joyce enthusiasts.

A story about "I Can't Go On, I'll Go on: A Selection from Samuel Beckett's Work" — 5 years ago

God, what an atrocious cover! If you’ve seen the older Grove Press editions of Beckett’s books, you know what a travesty the new series design is.

WORTH CONSUMING!

What an absolutely brilliant book, superbly written and consistently funny. Perhaps my new favorite novel.

A story about "HTTP: The Definitive Guide" — 5 years ago

Readable and informative. The first few chapters cover basics that anybody interested in a book on HTTP will probably just skip, though. This isn’t an idle complaint, given the book’s $45 price tag.

A story about "Pomes Penyeach" — 5 years ago

Not bad, but rather unremarkable, at least upon my first reading.

A story about "Road to America" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Set during the Algerian revolution, this is the story of an Algerian boxer struggling to maintain personal autonomy as he navigates the conflicting pressures of DeGaullists and the FLN. Beautiful artwork, though the visual narrative left me confused a few times, and I was disappointed by the conclusion of the story. Nevertheless very enjoyable.
