Very educational. Ryle shows that many common ideas about cognitive processes are false without the acceptance of dualism. (1/12/05)
This book is essentially a brief history of chemistry focusing on the science’s development out of alchemy. I found it interesting because I have read a lot about Isaac Newton and his development of physics, but comparatively little on chemistry. I must admit, however, that the book’s discussion of alchemy was far more interesting than its short treatment of modern chemistry. (1/28/05)
An interesting critique of humanism and modern society’s fatally optimistic belief in its ability to control its future. I agree with Ehrenfeld’s assertion that we must be more careful of the end-products of our technologies. Furthermore, I find his argument that we should preserve nature regardless of its economic utility. However, I cannot agree that we should cease scientific research (because technology can have negative effects) and return ourselves to the good-old-times. Despite its flaws I found this book interesting, and might recommend it to others. (2/06/05)
Disturbing and explicit but frequently lyrical, this novel explores homosexuality and the rise of AIDS. (2/08/05)
Interesting mainly for historical reasons.. Not particulary noteworthy by modern standards. (2/08/05)
A very entertaining book, although less due to the plot than to the style. The scenes of revenge are not nearly as interesting as the scenes that simply reveal the follies of society. (2/13/05)
Amazing… Truly, as China MiĆ©ville describes it, an “anti-fantasy”. (3/11/05)
Entertaining, political science-fiction in which the US / UN (now the same entity) are terrorizing the world and preventing technological progress. (3/12/05)
