I’ve never really read historical fiction before, so I don’t know if this is typical, but the way the author tied the book together by adding a fictional character while making it pretty clear what was actual historical fact was interesting. (11/24/2004)
About as good as fudoki. I wish these books were slightly better written, but they’re pretty interesting, so I will probably continue to read them nonetheless. (11/24/2004)
It was ok but really didn’t compare to The Third Policeman. (11/24/2004)
Having already read the essay after which the book is titled, I found the rest of the essays in The White Album slightly dissapointing in comparison. However, even these essays are very good; Didion is certainly an amazing writer. (11/24/2004)
Well, only 3 more volumes after this one… (11/28/04)
In addition to being highly educational, this book was hilarious. I bought this book after reading an interview with Whyte in New Scientist, and while it seemed he was slightly more restrained in the book, he has no sympathy for those who commit logical fallacies. Highly recommended. (11/28/04)
Brutal and fascinating, like Banks’s other novels. (11/28/04)
A very interesting and humorous novel. I read the Glenny translation, which is apparently comparatively poor, so perhaps I will read some other version in the future. (12/12/2004)
