A story about "Wonder Woman - The Complete First Season" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Classic nostalgic fun that brings to mind many happy memories of watching this on a Saturday afternoon as a child. The first season is slightly more fun than the following two, as it is based in the forties like the first run of comics and deals with Wonder Woman fighting the Nazis.

A story about "Predator (Kay Scarpetta Mysteries)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This Scarpetta mystery is quite a rollicking one, and seems to be a return to form until we reach the ending. From there it seems as if Cornwell grew tired of writing the book and wanted to end it as quickly as possible and get it out of her hair. So many events happen in such a short period of time it almost seems like a coda to a television movie where we are told what happens to everybody through text on screen. Maybe the next book continues the story… we’ll hav to wait and see. Still worth reading, though.

A story about "The New Rebellion (Star Wars)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the best books of the EU. Instead of just focusing on another ‘superweapon’ (boy, did that plot get recycled time and time again), this is a story that subverts the rebellion that has now become a government with a new rebellion seeking to overthrow them. To see the characters actually placed in a new situation and to have to consider their place in the galaxy is a breath of fresh air in what was rapidly becoming a tired saga,

A story about "Star Wars - Episode III, Revenge of the Sith (Widescreen Edition)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I tried to hard to like this movie when it came out at the cinema, and it is a far sight better than the previous two prequels… but you can’t really look at it without realising that Lucas dropped the ball with how great this movie could have been. It should have been on the level of a greek tragedy, but the characters of Padme and Anakin never reached those heights. Perhaps that is the greatest irony, that the galaxy’s most evil tyrant started off as a whiny little dipshit who was easily manipulated.

A story about "The Future is Worth Fighting For (Serenity)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I am not ordinarily a fan of novelizations as they never feel like a ‘real’ novel – the only one that ever came close was Orson Scott Card’s “The Abyss”. That being said, though, DeCandido’s “Serenity” is not that bad. He manages to give some reasons behind some of things that bugged me slightly in the movie, such as Mal’s sudden antagonism towards Simon and River. I thought he did a pretty good representation of the characters, and I hope that the rumours are true that he is writing an original “Firefly” novel. If there is to be no sequel, let’s hope for some good books!

A story about "Accordion Crimes" — 4 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I love E. Annie Proulx’ books, but this one was kind of disappointing. As the accordion changes hands, we are told a story of the new owner. Some of these stories are brilliant, others are just downright boring and a struggle to get through. As a result, the book is wildly uneven, even though the ending is brilliant and poignant. I wish there was a median between recommendation and not recommending on this site, because I don’t want to downright say to avoid it… because when the book is on track it is wonderful.

A story about "Pride & Prejudice" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The first twenty minutes of this adaptation had me panicking, but I soon grew to love it, and this is coming from a longterm Austenite and one who fervently loved the BBC production of the nineties.
Surprisingly good!

A story about "Northern Exposure - The Complete Second Season" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I always had fond memories of Northern Exposure, and looked forward to getting the DVDs. The first season didn’t live up to my memories, and i was starting to wonder if this was one of those cases where the memory was fonder than the reality. However, it was the second season where it all seemed to click together – the actors found their footing, the storylines found a perfect balance of drama and quirkiness. By the final episode of this second season it is a damn near masterpiece.

A story about "The Crystal Star (Star Wars (Random House Paperback))" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A flawed novel, but still worth reading. The main problem is that the characterisation of Luke is terrible, and the dialogue just doesn’t seem right. But at least the toddlers aren’t too annoying in this story (as they have been in other books in the EU), and props must be given for an original storyline rather than yet another remnant of the Empire getting together and launching an attack.

A story about "Bambi (Two-Disc Special Edition)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The most exquisitely drawn animation ever made, unrivalled until Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away”. Sweet, poignant and heartbreaking.
