A review of "The Martian Chronicles (The Grand Master Editions)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the most melancholy and elegaic books you will ever read in your life. It is both dreamy and jarringly realistic – and when it all comes down to it, disturbingly philosophic. All of Bardbury’s works are excellent, but this is nothing more than a masterpiece.

A review of "King Kong (Widescreen Edition)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Although the first forty minutes of this movie are in some need of drastic editing (IMO, they could have just started the film on the boat) but once they get to Skull Island it is a fricking masterpiece. It is much better to have a film tha starts badly and goes out on a high note than a film which starts well and has a shitty ending.
Naomi Watts is the true star here, as she sells the believibility of Kong in every one of her actions and the look in her eyes. If it wasn’t for her, the film might have been harder for the audience to accept.

A review of "Titanic (Special Collector's Edition)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I have always been obsessed with the story of the Titanic, especially as my whole family comes from Belfast and my greatgrandfathers worked at building it and the Olympic in the Harland and Woolf shipyards.
This film is a technical masterpiece, so you can overlook the oh-so-cheesy script and vapid love story (and yet still kind of enjoy it at the same time as a guilty pleasure). The last hour of the film, when the ship starts to sink the visuals are jaw-droppingly good.
Suspend the snark, and enjoy the spectacle.

Australian Gothic — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A compelling and evocative novel, “The White Earth” is also a starkly Gothic tale of the Australian landscape. There are ghosts, monsters, Mrs Danvers-like housekeepers and family secrets in an decaying station house in the outback. The magic realism has a “was it all just because…?” ending, but still falls neatly into the genre of magic realism. The politics of reconciliation and the Native Title Act give it a distinct air, and the novel is all the richer for it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

The quintessential Australian novel about two families who come to share a house and together make it a home. It has an added quality for me as it is set in my hometown, and was a constant balm for homesickness whenever I was away from there.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A road trip across America, this album is Tori at her best and most brilliant.

A review of "Madagascar (Widescreen Edition)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed this film, although strangely enough the first half set in the zoo is better than when they finally arrive in Madagascar.
I would have loved to have seen the original story, where they were actually liberated by animal rights activists though. It would have been an interesting angle to a story aimed at children, although depending on the way it was handled possibly offensive.

A review of "Justice League - Secret Origins" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A worthy adaptation of the DC stories, taking it far out of the “Superfriends” league. My only major quibble is with the characterisation of The Flash – I liked Wally much better when he was struggling with the balance between being a superhero and being a husband and father, rather than this dopey wannabe playboy.

A review of "Toy Story 2 (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of those rare beasts of a sequel which happens to surpass its predecessor. If the song montage to “When She Loved Me” doesn’t make you wish for a time machine to go back and rescue the toys you callously discarded in your youth, you must be a sociopath.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A movie with a lot of heart, and enough zingy lines to make the adult who usually dismisses such fare (but is forced to sit through it) enjoy it as well. If you are still a kid at heart, there is much to love here.
