They're much better on the radio — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

The “Car Talk” radio show is great, but this book consists mainly of uninformed twaddle that isn’t even very funny. They’re better on the radio when you get to hear their voices and maniacal laughter, and they’re better when they’re at least sort of talking about cars. The only exception is the last part of the book, “The Education Trilogy”, which is worth reading if you don’t already understand the ways in which the US educational system is fucked up. I understood, and it’s been phrased better by others anyway.

Why I recommend "Taking chances: Abortion and the decision not to contracept" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A very insightful piece of social science research, presented eloquently. If you think “abortion should be legal, but it shouldn’t be used as birth control”, you should read this book.

A review of "La Lucha (The Struggle)" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

The movie is more about the personal interactions between the people on the business side of lucha in Orange County than about the actual wrestling. Unfortunately, this is largely because the director wasn’t able to get legal permission to use most of the footage he shot. But that doesn’t excuse the poor editing and appalling scrolling captions.

Why I recommend "Axiomatic" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Full of ethical/philosophical dilemmas that would keep anybody awake at night if only they were real. In a few centuries, maybe some of them will be.

A story about "Blue Highways: A Journey into America" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Re-reading this for the nth time. There’s this dream that if you drive 10 or 100 or 1000 miles, you might find something better or at least different than the world you know. I’m not sure if that’s true anymore, but this book says that it was once, at least.

A review of "The Passionate Mistakes and Intricate Corruption of One Girl in America (Native Agents)" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Not so much writing as n pages of stream-of-consciousness. Could benefit from an editor, or a less egotistical author.

A review of "Flip-Flopped" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The protagonist Keeley, a scientist, isn’t entirely convincing, but even if a woman with a Ph.D would never act that ditzy, it’s refreshing to see one as a chicklit character.

Why I recommend "A Fearful Freedom: Women's Flight from Equality" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A good look at the conflict between protectionist and egalitarian forms of feminism. If you’re a woman who says “I’m not a feminist…” but appreciates the right to vote and not be raped by your husband, you should read this book.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Here’s the movie in brief so you don’t have to spend the 2 1/2 hours: CAN PEOPLE PLZ STOP KILLING EACH OTHER NOW KTHXBYE.

Pretty faithful — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Captures the feel of the book pretty well. I’d watch it again 1 or 6 times.
