Why I gave up consuming "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason" — 3 years ago

I gave up when I got to the passage talking about how American soldiers cried when they killed civilians, but of course soldiers who were Muslim never ever would do that. He’s better off critiquing religion in general - it’s a critique that sorely needs to be made - but it’s too bad he confuses the issue by going after Islam in particular (either religion is inherently negative or Islam is worse than other religions—decide) and with borderline racism.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Needed more explicit sex, tho’.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Very shallow, more full of platitudes and silly stories aimed at people without a taste for abstract thought than of actual insight about sociopaths.

A review of "The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time" — 3 years ago

I wish Adams had had time to finish the novel, but the material they added to pad out the book was fairly thin. If you’re a hard-core fan, you’ll read this no matter what I say, but if not, go read Last Chance to See instead.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I didn’t think much of the book, but the movie was worse. I didn’t expect anything from the movie (I have a strange compulsion to see movies based on books I’ve read, even when the books weren’t good), but it was below my expectations. I’m glad I spent the whole movie only half-paying attention and doing stuff online.

Why I recommend "Bright College Years: Inside the American Campus Today" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Despite outlining everything that’s wrong with the American higher education system today, Matthews still left me in love with the idea of it and wondering at how it’s managed to withstand the test of time. A good overview.

Why I recommend "Blankets" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Intense, personal, beautiful. The way he depicts snow falling can make you cold on a 90-degree summer night when you need the fan on to be able to sleep. I read it in a 24-hour period (I stayed up an hour past when I should have in order to finish it.)

Why have so many people on AllConsuming read it, though? I only heard about it from one newspaper article a few years ago, and a lot of books I’d have thought would be more popular had fewer readers.

Why I recommend "Following Sean" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A quiet movie, not one that hits you over the head with any sort of message, because there is no message. It’s just about how a couple of ordinary people lived their lives and how where people came from makes them into what they are. I’d have a few beers with Sean.

Plus, the use of the Lori McKenna song during the credits was perfect.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Worth it if only for the essay “The Nerd Voice”.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I wouldn’t say that the book was not worth consuming, however, I have to admit that I’m prejudiced against authors who lift phrases wholesale from modern physics, unless they really prove that they understand physics. In this case, Winterson didn’t prove it. Why don’t authors stick to domains they’re capable of talking about honestly? Shouldn’t there be plenty of those? Oh, well. (I don’t understand physics, either. But, I don’t write novels that bandy about concepts from it.)

I liked Written on the Body and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit better.
