Good - but not as good as I expected. — 2 years ago

I had very high hopes for this book…but although it was a good read, it left me slightly disappointed. I think I had heard so much hype about it that the book just couldn’t live up to it. I would probably have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t heard anything about it beforehand.

It is quite amusing in parts, but not laugh-out-loud funny. What it does though is give glimpses of how hard it must be for immigrants trying to integrate into a new society, and how WWII affected ordinary citizens, caught up in the conflict through no fault of their own. The most interesting character for me was the sister Vera. She sounded awful at first, but I had quite changed my opinion of her by the end.

Why I recommend "The Big Lebowski" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is probably the funniest movie made – sadly under appreciated though!! It manages to achieve the remarkable, in that it becomes even funnier with repeated viewings. Jeff Bridges – always excellent – turns in an Oscar worthy performance (but of course, movies like this don’t win Oscars), and the supporting cast all do a brilliant job too.

I’d give this movie 10 out of 10!

Two wonderful movies — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love these movies. Before Sunrise – the first one – tells how two strangers meet each other by chance and end up spending the night walking around Vienna, getting to know each other and falling in love.

The second movie – Before Sunset – is set nine years later, and to say much about it would be to give away quite a lot of what is meant to have happened in the intervening period.

The second movie is my favourite of the two – with a killer last line! – but both movies are brilliant, and I would recommend watching them both in one sitting!

A review of "Ella Minnow Pea: A Novel in Letters" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a great book! Very clever and funny. Anybody who loves the way the English language works would probably enjoy this book. Be warned – you will probably end up reading some of the later parts out loud…if you ever read it, you will understand why I say this!!

Wonderful Book — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Fabulous book. I have read Paullina Simon’s earlier novels, Tully, Red Leaves and Eleven Hours, but haven’t read any of the Tatiana and Alexander trilogy.

The Girl In Times Square was my favourite book out of all the books I read in 2006 (and I read a LOT!!). I was absolutely gripped from beginning to end. One thing – PLEASE can we have a sequel?!

The book tells the story of Lily Quinn, a young girl who has a stroke of very good luck, and a stroke of very bad luck coming her way. Also, her best friend Amy McFadden goes missing, and Lily finds her life getting entangled with the life of the Detective investigating the case.
