A story about "Ready or Not: An All-American Girl Novel"

Ready or Not: An All-American Girl Novel

by Meg Cabot

...and I’m disappointed. Like all of the other books I’ve read by Meg Cabot, it’s very humorously written and I found myself laughing a lot. However, the whole point of this book is basically Sam asking herself, “Am I ready for sex? Am I not ready for sex?” She agonizes, embarasses herself, agonizes, jumps to conclusions, and agonizes some more. Eventually (spoiler!) she decides that she’s really not ready.

But then.

Her pride gets wounded when she realizes her boyfriend wasn’t actually planning to seduce her, and she ignores her own conclusions and seduces him instead.

I’m not really (that much of) a prude. I’ve enjoyed other books with similar issues (like Sloppy Firsts, etc.). When it’s written convincingly and compellingly, sex fits right in with the rest of teenage drama. In Ready or Not, though, the conclusion seemed inappropriate because it basically suggested that it’s a good thing to have sex even when you don’t feel like you’re ready to. I felt like the author was pushing an agenda, when all I really wanted was a nice fluffy read.

A story about "Shabby Chic the Gift of Giving"

Shabby Chic the Gift of Giving

by Rachel Ashwell

I picked up this book on a whim at the library. It was due back three weeks later and I hadn’t even looked at it. I decided to quickly browse through it, but it’s not really that “browseable”, in that it’s not a book of 3-step projects (I think that’s what I was expecting).

To my surprise, I found it is actually more like “Mary Jane’s Ideabook Cookbook Lifebook”, which I love. Once I realized this, I got it back from the library and am now busily planning my Christmas gifts.

If you’re looking for a hand-holding book that will help you make the perfect gift in 30 minutes, this isn’t it. This book is more for the person who is disillusioned with generic, meaningless store gifts and is willing to take a little time and let serendipity guide the way to great gifts that will be treasured and remembered.

It seems like it might bend the mind of the adult reader more than the child, who might just accept the premise without overthinking it. I liked this one a whole lot!

When I was browsing Amazon the other day, though, I kept coming across it, and it sounded GOOD. So finally I picked it up, and now I really don’t want to put it down. Unfortunately, it’s not really an option because of the need for income, but every spare minute, you’ll find me in this book.

I spent most of yesterday reading it instead of working (oops) and now I want to build and live in a wall-tent. Go figure.

A story about "The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life"

The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life

by Steve Leveen

This was a good overview of reading, successful reading techniques, and types of reading. My only gripe is that the author suggests that he’ll tell me how to get more reading time, and in the end, basically says, “You’ll find the time.” Well, thanks for that insight. Other than this one minor annoyance, I enjoyed the book.

A story about "Only You, Sierra (Sierra Jensen Series)"

Only You, Sierra (Sierra Jensen Series)

by Robin Jones Gunn

“Only You, Sierra” picks up where “A Promise is Forever,” the last book in the Christy Miller series, left off. Readers of that series will enjoy finding out more about the characters they know and love, but the Christy Miller books are not a prerequisite for this book. Sierra is a compelling character and this book can certainly stand on its own.
When Sierra returns from a life-changing missions trip in Europe, she feels mature, godly, and confident. In the airport in London, and later on her flight back to Portland, Sierra encounters Paul, a young man who she feels a strong connection to. Her direct manner fascinates him; at the same time, she pricks his conscience. They both will remember this meeting for a long time.

When Sierra arrives “home,” it’s not to the home she left, as her family moved in with her beloved grandmother while she was in Europe. Suddenly, Sierra has to deal with a new city, new school, and her Granna Mae’s failing mind. For the first time in her life, she is the outsider, and she retreats into herself while she tries to figure out how to deal with it.

Fortunately, God has not left Sierra alone, and she learns to lean more on Him in times of uncertainty.

This book is the first in a series of twelve, which will appeal most to teen- and pre-teen-aged girls. If you don’t fall into that category, though, don’t let that stop you. We can all benefit from Robin Jones Gunn’s gentle way of revealing God’s love.
