Why I recommend "_Champagne_ Mangoes" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

These are the smaller, yellow mangoes (sometimes called Manila mangoes), not the larger green-to-red ones – and they are so much better!. So rich and creamy and fleshy.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Don’t rent this if you’re particularly squeamish, delicate, or if you have unhealed sexual trauma. This movie speaks to brutality, heartbreak and the cruel, insane brilliance of survival. It’s a well-done film that doesn’t shy away from the complexities of life, love or abuse. It is dark, tragic, tender, a little hopeful, and certainly haunting.

Why I recommend "Lágrimas Negras" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It weds the sophistication of old Havana with the passion and grit of a Flamenco Juerga. (They do a nice tango and a bossa nova, too).

Gorgeous!

A story about "Steak" — 3 years ago

This is huge for me. I have tasted beef 3 times since 1985.

On my way into Whole Foods the other day, they had freshly grilled samples outside, and I don’t know what possessed me, but I took a bite. And it was so good, I grabbed another on the way out. My digestive system felt it a little, but I figure my body must want something in it. Very grounding, I believe. Anyway, I bought a NY Sirloin Strip (? – whatever the sample was) a couple of days later. I will cook it for dinner tomorrow. What an adventure for me.

A review of "Hustle & Flow" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really loved this movie. I loved the gritty, 70’s-looking cinematography, and Terrence Howard’s performance, as always, was a force of nature. (Doesn’t hurt that he’s so easy on the eyes, either!)

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Meh.

Insert Gallic shrug :{

I really wanted to love this movie, but I found it painfully over-rated. The only aspect I really liked was costuming, specifically, the male lead’s suits.

A story about "Hildegard von Bingen - In Portrait / Ordo Virtutum, Vox Animae, Patricia Routledge" — 3 years ago

One of my favorite mystics. Abbess, poet, composer, artist, healer, theologian, 12th C. feminist, visionary, and nature-loving, holy embodied bad-ass.

A story about "Macaroni & Cheese" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The orange kind from the box.
(I’m feeling sad, not inclined to cook, and wanting mushy kid food. But I’m going to eat my brussels sprouts, too).
