A story about "Fire" — 44 weeks ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I really wish I could say that I thought this movie was worth consuming. I loved “Water” and I typically like films like this one.

This film bored me pretty quickly, though, and a few parts of it (especially near the end, when one of the women confronts her husband) are pretty cheesy.

I appreciate the message, but the movie was lacking.

Why I recommend "Step Up" — 44 weeks ago

If you like dance films, then you’ll love it… but it is very predictable in almost every way. Still, it is fun for some light entertainment. If you want another dance film with an inner city touch, try Take The Lead (which is superior, in my opinion).

WORTH CONSUMING!

Highly recommended foreign film. Be wary that it can be depressing to sensitive individuals.

Most amazing television series I’ve had the pleasure of watching. If you have Netflix, rent it.

A story about "A Great and Terrible Beauty (Readers Circle)" — 48 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is one of the better YA books that I’ve had the pleasure to read. It follows the story of a Victorian-era girl named Gemma Doyle, who has a vision of her mother dying seconds before it happens in reality. Forced to keep the cause of her mother’s death a secret to keep up appearances, she is taken to a Finishing school to learn how to be a proper young lady. There she meets three new friends. But the visions don’t stop, and she is warned by a mysterious boy that she needs to learn to control them… or else.

I don’t want to include anything else (as it might spoil the story) but this was an amazingly good book. It is very hard to put down after you begin it. The characters are nicely fleshed out, and you enjoy hearing about their adventures despite their (sometimes glaring) flaws. They all have a distinct personality—something that often seems to be lacking in YA books these days.

I would definitely recommend this.

A story about "Anna of Byzantium" — 48 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Anna of Byzantium is the story of an exiled Princess and how she went from being heir to the throne to being forced to retreat to a convent away from palace life. The narrative details her childhood and revolves around her education and the actions of her manipulative grandmother and brother. I enjoyed this book very much. Anna is a very fleshed out character—a good mix of noble qualities and flaws. It is hard not to sympathize with her as her planned life crumbles around her. Very good book! I’d love to see a movie made out of it. Read December 2008

A story about "Saving Juliet" — 48 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Read December 2008. This book is about a girl named Mimi who feels trapped by her current situation. Her mother pushes her to continue acting and pursue it as a career when all Mimi wants to do is become a doctor. During a production one night, Mimi argues with her mother and storms out of the theatre, only to be whisked away to the Verona of Shakespeare’s play, Romeo & Juliet, with her co-star, Troy. She eventually meets Juliet and empathizes with her situation, deciding to try to alter Juliet’s fate and save her life. This was a pretty interesting read and is in line with most YA books I’ve read in terms of quality. I would not recommend it to guys – too much talk about crushes and lovey dovey mess. Ha.
