The Johnny Society is a difficult group to categorise which in itself is quite a joy. Every genre they inhabit on this album has an absolute purpose and is masterfully executed. Pop, rock, swamp, experimental, garage, basement, gritty, funky, dixie, roots – it’s all there. The immediate impression is one of everything 70’s including the Kinks, Queen, the Beatles, Deep Purple, Tony Joe White and even the Eagles/Little River Band to name a few. But they’re not just references. They’re played with, added to, mixed around and the result is utterly contemporary. Anything with banjo, harpsichord, clarinet, Wurlitzer, tuba and trumpet has gotta be good in my book. Well worth a listen.
