A question I have about "Eyes Wide Shut" — 3 years ago

Why would you set a film a New York and then film it in London? New York streets just don’t look like that . . . and that tagged US mailbox that kept following Cruise around . . . that was really creepy.

Also, Cruise doesn’t tell Domino his name, but she calls him by it and Nightengale doesn’t tell Cruise exactly what to buy for the orgy, but he knows . . . continuity problems, or part of the ‘is it a dream?’ effect?

Watched this to commemorate Cruise’s censorship of Katie Holmes love scenes . . .

A question I have about "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)" — 3 years ago

Anyone read the novel on which it was based? Seems similiar to the ending episode of Norris’ McTeague . . . ?

you have to see it, you don't have to love it — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

racist james bond type trash that oversimplifies and stereotypes, but for today’s political crises. and with a contemporary aesthetic. on the other hand, healthy, cynical materialist perspective that kind of requires and produces the cultural and political stereotypes . . .

Why I recommend "Gaslight" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Ends with an evil husband tied to a chair, just like in Panic Room.

Why I recommend "Jezebel" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A black and white film about a red dress. Also about brute violence and physical abjection . . . slavery, whippings, dancing and illness. Also about New Orleans public health, physical mobility within the city, the city’s responsibility to its citizens, the city’s relationship to nation, economics, isolation of communities of New Orleans and within New Orleans . . . Think about teaching it . . .

A review of "Blind Shaft" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Dark, dirty, sad but sweet. Sweet vengence and irony. Nice scenes in town, strange dry cold landscapes. Digital? Creepy mine scenes, odd couple. A little mystery.

Why I recommend "Shadow of a Doubt" — 4 years ago

I agree, suburban Hitchcock, and one of Hitch’s only “families” . . . makes this odd, but good. One of smartest heroines too. Good if you don’t care for uncles . . . Cotton is creepy and the house and town are fascinating, well shot and composed.

Why I recommend "Zatoichi /Sonatine Double Bill" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Haven’t seen Sonatine. I love it when Zatoichi gambles, though. What a winner.
