A question I have about "In Cold Blood" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Is that Jensen character supposed to be Capote?

This movie is great – movie Capote couldn’t improve on the final hanging sequence, so they just copied it. And this film has a way more riveting Clutter murder scene, the murder and its violence are way more important too, less gratuitous than in Capote. Almost as good as the book . . .

Film has a references to Sierra Madre . . . does the book? I don’t remember, but I guess I’ll try to search inside at Amazon . . .

A story about "Gattaca" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Sharp past future look, the film doesn’t look dated yet. Cute chubby faced Jude Law. Some weak dialog and some narrative cliches (the ending is really bad) but a lot of nice acting, great swimming sequences, suspense and a smart plot with a very relevant social critique.

A question I have about "Angels in America" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I think the stagy-ness of the dialog (lots of talking, very dramatic) works well for TV, maybe more so than if this had been a movie. I feel like it was made, and made well, for the small screen. I LOVE the reuse of the actresses – I didn’t see this as a stage play, did they do that there too?

Didn’t love part 2 as much, too limited/limiting in time and place.

could have been better — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

i hardly ‘saw’ it because i was trying to read along. felt a little like ‘don’t look now’ because of the venice setting, all quesey and grey . . . every time i see an interpretation of or read merchant of venice i think it’s going to be better, more complex or critical than it always is, so it’s always a let down . . . but i’d say its still worth seeing. but without the exclamation marks!

you have to work for it for it to work.

i love it but not as much as i love bicycle thief — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

cinematography, story and appeal aren’t as strong for me as bicycle thief. but everything dkp says is true . . .

Maria (a young maid who is the only person kind to Umberto D.) is a good character and well played. dkp also doesn’t mention Flike, the wonder dog.

Scene in the hospital is my favorite . . . more interiors than Bicycle Thief . . .

A question I have about "Brokeback Mountain" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

How is this film like and unlike Treasure of the Sierra Madre? Against some popular opinion, I think it IS a western.

Why I recommend "American Psycho (Uncut Killer Collector's Edition)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

it’s not psychological realism, that’s for sure. but it is the single best use of the song “i’m walking on sunshine.” Ever.

and it reminds me of henry james. i’ll figure out why later.
