A question I have about "Boxcar Bertha" — 3 years ago

So, was the phase of print dresses, black shoes and bare legs that I, and others like me, went through inspired (unconsciously but directly) by this movie or was this movie part of a larger fashion moment that influenced later generations through multiple channels?

Do not judge this aesthetic by the image on the amazon dvd box. It’s a little, no, a lot, different.

WORTH CONSUMING!

for the film in the dvd extras. he says, “maybe it doesn’t work.” oh, but it does, at least for me. the combination of 1970s naturalist acting and psychology and classical hollywood musical aesthetic is brilliant, and, i think, very present in things like gangs of new york and the aviator. and goodfellas.

kind of feels like a muppet movie, without the muppets. and minelli is not a terrible actress.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Sort of like Stepford Wives, in theme and appearance. But not sci-fi, a different kind of abstract thing . . . Watch with Blue Gate Crossing for sex, pools, gender discussions . . . or maybe with Boudu Saved From Drowning.

Or, for that matter, Lovely and Amazing.

Also, kind of like The Graduate, but better.

ps. Computer Dating.

WORTH CONSUMING!

i like the way its very much about east berlin and west berlin and reunification and nostalgia for east germany . . . and the use of the the furniture and the apartments and the city and the cars and the countryside and everything is nice and precise and cute and all . . .

but i also like how much appeal the film had for me, emotionally, and i’ve never really been there or lived that experience at all.

a little light. and i hate romantic comedies. i didn’t hate this, but i didn’t love it either. except for how angry that one woman was. and her husband, who was so great. not enough people were laughing in my theater.

some nice close ups.

and how ugly were those clothes she designed? that cracked me up.

WORTH CONSUMING!

You can be the perfec tourist. You can visit so many locations, pay such close attention and take such lovely pictures.

You can even leave your human body and perception behind.

Why I recommend "The Conversation" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Pure pleasure.

Repetitive, repeating shapes and details, clarity and muddle. Plays with the attention, directs your attention, misdirects your attention . . . sound without image.

And now I get it, Harrison Ford is hot.
