Friends With Money Go To Africa and Lose the Irony.
als26 hasn't consumed anything recently.
what was once a black space in my mind is now fully present. i love the way they talk over each other and burst into song. and the beautiful slow pace.
I laughed, I cried, I was shocked by the state violence. Or maybe I was shocked that it appeared in a movie. Or a movie that did so many other things as well, so well.
To be honest, I don’t like the French Revolution. I always resented having to study it. The French ruined a perfectly good revolution!
But I like the first half of the film, particularly before the girls separate and then just after. The end drags a bit.
Does not use moving images to tell a story, create a mood, make an argument or produce critical estrangement.
Like a lot of people, I’d compare it to a series of perfume ads except it doesn’t make me want to buy anything either.
Too much staring out a window. As if we haven’t seen enough of that in 100+ years of cinema history. I heard this was a major part of S. Coppola’s last film too.
I kind of liked the music . . . and Schwartzman was kind of amazing.
Oh yeah, and they use too much dialog to disclose information. Definately notamovie.
I saw this when I was young and me and my friends just loved it. We used to watch it repeatedly and act it out and quote it . . . and spook ourselves with music boxes.
When I saw it again I thought it was still very well made, pretty and eerie. The plot and dialog were a little weak for grown up tastes. Bette Davis rocked, though. And I had no idea who she was when I was little.
I didn’t remember that there were 2 sisters, and even when the film started I couldn’t remember which one was “contacted” and then, of course, they both are – one by sight and one by sound – which is very clever and cool. I think I’d forgotten the sound/writing stuff and remembered the blue light and the mirrors . . .
Well, it was a great spooky movie as a kid and I enjoyed watching it again as an adult. I jumped when . . . well, I won’t say.
Just saw this for the second time. I saw it in college (at someone’s apartment? on TV? maybe not the whole thing?) and didn’t care for it so much. Liked it better this time around . . .
And more American food labels everywhere . . .
not as funny as it tries to be. takes the joy out of sex, cake and even the song “shout” . . .
Everyone’s right, the first half is better than the second and it is suspense on a plane and claustrophobia and all that.
I also like the kind of intimate portrayals of really tough customer service work, the flight attendents and hotel clerks and all . . .
