at the pittsburgh 3 rivers film festival. silent, with live music for the score, very nice, very hitchcock.
dislike the son subplot. it is trying to be oedipal? liked better the masturbation theory . . . masculine blindness as philosophical-technical problem, and funny.
and I’d like to see it again. Liked the visual treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder . . . didn’t like Blanchet as much as DiCaprio. Am I the only person who thinks he can act? Even just a little?
and i thought his desire for death had something to do the with the possibilities for masculinity of the time and place.
less precious. nice and slow, which is a feat for contemporary film.
i’m routinely and repeatedly stunned while watching. so stunned i always forget how it ends. could be seen with Symphonie Pastorale, where the ending is . . . different.
but applegate could be funnier. why aren’t the girls allowed to be funny? austin powers 2, zoolander and the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy have the same problem . . .
dialog is a little off sometimes. acting is good. pair with spike lee’s bamboozled . . . or anchorman: the legend of ron burghundy.
more in retrospect than when i was watching it. dirty 70s glow.
