It is the understatement of the century when, at the beginning of the movie, Dr. Loomis tells the school principal that: “[Michael Myers] is a very disturbed young man.” I would have had a few more colorful choice words to say about the mental state of young Mr. Myers. But seriously, this is a great remake of a classic with the added bonus of Rob Zombie imparting it with his particular flavor. I do not think, this remake of Halloween, would have been as good with anyone else directing it.

This is also known as “Mazinkaiser Vs. The Dark General”. It is a sort of remake of the 70’s Mazinger Z movie, “Mazinger Z Vs. The Dark General”. This is the last OVA (Original Video Animation) ever produced from the Mazinkaiser series up to date and it is totally independent, story-wise, from the other 7 OVA’s. The original Mazinger Z movie was loosely based on the 92nd episode of the Mazinger Z original series. On that episode GreatMazinger is introduced when the Dark General exacts revenge for the death of Dr. Hell, Mazinger Z’s former enemy. The plot of this Mazinkaiser OVA is quite different from the original, although the basic premise is the same. The Dark General wants to avenge the death of Dr. Hell that occured on the last episode of the previous OVA 7-part series. But, besides the premise, everything else is a fresh new story. There is even mention of Mazinkaiser able to operate and defend the earth from outer space, but there has been no more OVA’s from this series. The previous 7-part OVA series of Mazinkaiser was dubbed in english and distributed by ADV Films as two separate DVD volumes, but this stand alone OVA has yet to be distributed in dubbed version. I have only seen it in Japanese with English subtitles.

This time around Harmony Gold delivered to us a product that surpassed all expectations. The story, character development, animation, music, sound, extras, everything was great. And better yet the story was pretty much self contained. Although it left out some things open for future movies, the main plot was enough tied up that if there is not another one for a few years we will not be left disappointed (remember “The Sentinels”). After watching the movie you get the sense that something did get accomplished this time around and that the story was advanced with a purpose. I just hope fan responce is good enough to warrant a few more installments. Even if you are new to Robotech you are going to love this. Enjoy it while it is hot, don’t wait until it is on a bargain bin somewhere. When an anime title is sold “cheap”, is because there has been lack of support for the title and the producers have discontinued present and future projects based on that franchise. You will end up dissapointed because, although you are getting a great title “cheap”, there will be no more coming out. So, if you like an anime title, support it now, while it is hot and the producers are either maiking it or importing it, if you wait for the bargain bin it will be too late.

I watched this movie only because I’ve had a crush on Soleil Moon Frye since I was a kid.

What can I say? I have a Cheetarah fetish!

The only good thing about this movie is that the main actress spends most of the movie naked. Unless you like gratuitous boobie shots, I would suggest to stay away from this one.
