unbelievably wonderful to read. i am reading this really as fast as possible to get back into “practice”. the translation seems really good so far and i appreciate proust’s style more and more with every page.
Highly unsettling but necessary read. Actually reading a signed first edition, the friend that leant it to me chatted with Selby a few years ago. Instills some reverence.
I’m trying to work my way through all of the New York Review books. I liked Contempt and so far I like Boredom as well. Moravia is truly talented… he captures such unsympathetic characters in a way that is not sensationalistic in the slightest… a constant theme always permeates his stories in an utterly subtle, polite manner.
This book is excellent and largely unknown. It’s a collection of short stories, very much like the compendiums of Lovecraft and Poe. I know those two comparisons are done to death but really, nobody in the history of “weird fiction” as we know it comes close to Ligotti’s distinctive combination of suggestive suspense (as classic as Hitchcock) and highly lyrical prose (as lovely as T.S. Eliot).
I sort of hate reading pop theory books like this but I’m hoping that once I get into it more I’ll find it worth hardcover price… I enjoyed The Tipping Point and I’m going through an ‘obsessed with social networks and biological parallels’ phase so this seemed like an obvious choice… we’ll see.
