A story about "Toxic Psychiatry: Why Therapy, Empathy and Love Must Replace the Drugs, Electroshock, and Biochemical Theories of the "New Psychiatry"" — 6 years ago

I’m kind of referencing this book and jumping around rather than reading it cover-to-cover. I actually didn’t realize that it had such a lame subtitle until I added it on here. Hrmph.

Anyone who desires a more analytical background on why I’m such a fuckwit should read this book.

A story about "The Name of the Rose: including Postscript to the Name of the Rose" — 6 years ago

I’ve enjoyed Calvino so much that I’ve decided to branch out. Recommendations have included Eco and Kundera, and I’m starting with Eco because I’m totally unfamiliar with him.

This books is interesting and engaging but not a breezy read. I read David Sedars’ ‘Naked’ before this, so the contrast is pretty strong! (:

UPDATE: Page 145 now and I’m more interested/engaged in the story. One of the comments on the back of the book says that “for all its erudition it moves with the pace of a thriller” or something like that… it’s true!

FINAL: Enjoyable but very long. I recommend reading it as a mystery story and NOT as a elaborate treatise on philosophy.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Reminded me of Bradbury, a bit.. a compelling novel. I don’t know if I want to call it sci-fi though. Much more about anthropology.. but futuristic. Fascinating, anyway.

A story about "If on a winter's night a traveler" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

On hold, since I stupidly lent it to a friend before I finished it.

“The novel I would most like to read at this moment,” Ludmilla explains, “should have at its driving force only the desire to narrate, to pile stories upon stories, without trying to impose a philosophy of life on you, simply allowing you to observe its own growth, like a tree, an entangling, as if of branches and leaves…”

On this point you are in immediate agreement with her; putting behind your pages lacerated by intellectual analyses, you dream of rediscovering a condition of natural reading, innocent, primitive…

It’s just beautiful language, within a completely unique storytelling style.

This book is on hold for a while because I leant it to somebody before I’d finished reading it, since I was also reading several other things and I don’t know, I’m stupid.

A story about "House with a Clock in Its Walls, The (Lewis Barnavelt)" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Re-reading… this series was my addiction when I was a kid. It would be nice if it caught on like Harry Potter! (: Just another high-quality overlooked children’s series.
