I admit I stopped watching a couple of episodes after "L" died — 2 years ago

because I thought it went downhill from there, and fast. But until then it was amazing, with lots of interesting ideas about the nature of justice, sharp and sudden plot twists, and characters who continually plan 5 moves ahead while only showing 2. Very clever.

It's certainly beautiful, but was it good? — 2 years ago

I still don’t know, and therefore I am tempted to say ‘no’, shallow beast that I am. I mean, it’s pretty obvious that everyone is plotting against each other and no good while come of it. And I think I’m missing some of the cultural hints needed to pick up on the subtler stuff. But the climax at the end is certainly awe-inspiring and worthy of the big screen.

WORTH CONSUMING!

After “Accelerando” which, while maybe not a masterpiece of writing but so incredibly rich and dense in far-out-yet-feasible ideas that it blew me away again and again, “The Atrocity Archives” is a short 2-part story about Bob Howard, low-level techie working for The Laundry, a super-secret British government agency dealing with the occult. And what a story. Mix Lovecraft with Stephenson and a little bit of Len Deighton and you are getting there. It’s mathematics and hackers mixed with the black arts and spy vs. spy.

It’s still a little rough around the edges, but I have no problem envisioning him in the list of SF giants in 50 years time.

fun concept ruined by atrocious acting — 2 years ago

but there were some very clever bits, and some hilarious ones. Not enough to make this a very good movie, though.

Pixar shows it can still weave its magic — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

From the strong short “Lifted” to the many memorable characters in the main feature, Ratatouille shines with that hallmark Pixar excruciating care for detail and top-notch animation combined with funny plot twists and insane character interaction and doesn’t fail to entertain once in the 110 minutes it uses to tell its tale. After the mediocre “Cars” it was a relief to see Pixar still among the top CGI movie makers.

I’m looking forward to WALL-E, the next Pixar flick, summer 2008.

when a few copies of a new experimental therapeutic device that allows people to share and influence other people’s dreams are stolen all hell breaks loose, leading to the dream world and the real world mixing.

I wish I had the chance to see this on the big screen. The dream sequences are amazing. Must-see.

Michael Bay sucks, Transformers rule — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Anyone complaining about the content of this movie:

It is a Michael Bay adaptation of a animated TV series specifically designed to sell toys.

What did you expect, Shakespeare?

All I know is that mr. Bay didn’t botch it as badly as I feared, the giant robots were awesome, and I enjoyed myself. There were many things I could complain about but really, Michael Bay. Says it all. Cardboard characters, retard plot, annoying camera action, this movie has all the hallmarks of a Bay movie.

And giant transforming robots. Robots win the day.

Meh — 2 years ago

Technically high-quality, the CGI was amazing, but the plot and characters are getting more than a little tired, although I will always enjoy anything with John Cleese and Eric Idle in it.

My one remaining question is, if the king got married to the queen and had princess Fiona as first-born daughter, when exactly and with whom did he father the whiny brat Artie?

Somebody below in the thread said “Justin Timberlake can act” and deserves to be beaten to a pulp with those very words.

I’ve had acid trips that were less, um, trippy.

As you can see by the other comments on this page, you will either like this movie a lot or not at all. This is one of those ‘no middle ground’ deals. I liked it.

and this one has a very young Jet Li, plenty of fast-paced action, unlikely characters and plot twists, and the obligatory bad subtitling. What’s not to like?
