The plot gets pretty convoluted at times and to be honest, the acting in the movie isn’t all that. Still, I think it stayed true to the manga which is one of my all-time favorites.

In case you are wondering, it is about a group of boyhood friends who get together and fantasize about a future where terrorists attack the world with virus weapons and giant robot and they have to step up and save the day. Typical boy fantasies ;) – they write all this down in a big ‘book of prophecy’.

Many years later when they are all grown up one of the main characters is a (lackluster) owner of a quickie mart taking care of his elderly mother and the baby abandoned by his sister when it appears that the events fantasized about in their childhood are becoming reality, complete with virus attacks and giant robot. This prompts him to reconnect with his childhood friends and… step up to save the world :)

But all does not go as planned, and who is behind these attacks anyway? The mystery unravels slowly and there are many twists and turns along the way, as well as many rock culture references (the title is a reference to the T. Rex song) and nods to 60s and 70s anime.

The manga covers events from 1969 to 2017 with several timeline cuts and flashbacks, and is told in 22 large volumes. The first movie covers volumes 1 to 5. The second one covers volumes 6 to 15 but it differs from the original manga on some key points. The final film in the trilogy covers the remainder of the volumes, but with several changes to the story. I haven’t been able to find this last movie yet. Drat.

And even the weirdness feels like “ticking off boxes” at times. “Here, have another HHGTTG reference!”. And Arthur became less and less Arthur-like as the book went on. And… And… I could file a million tiny little objections here. But at the end of the day, this was sort of a tribute. Let’s call it that. It wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t good. It’s… mostly harmless.

So I’m sort of curious (and a little apprehensive at the same time) of Colfer’s new installment in the HH series. Aside from the first book and the bleakness of the fifth book I don’t really recall much of it; so I thought I’d reread the lot.

Halfway through the set now, I had forgotten how much fun the first few books were. We lost a gifted storyteller when DNA passed away.

4 Julian May Novels [The Many-colored Land/The Adversary/The Golden Torc/ The Nonborn King]

I read this in a dutch translation when I was 12 or so and I loved it. When I recently found an English copy I couldn’t resist rereading it. Pulpy, but very entertaining. And I missed the many links to Celtic mythology when I was younger (or rather, I didn’t know about any of that) and the story is literally drenched in them. A compelling read.

I never got into Intervention and Galactic Milieu but I might give that a go again.

Just six 45-min episodes, but what a ride. Set in Tokyo, the plot revolves around an immortal private investigator as she explores the secrets of a modern and near-future world and the supernatural events that surround the life of immortals like herself. Gruesome torture, immortality, sex, blurring lines between VR and real life, this series is not for the faint of heart. Still I think it stands with the better anime out there.
