A story about "The Da Vinci Code"

The Da Vinci Code

by Dan Brown

Compulsively readable, but not always plausible.

Being a college student, I’m a bit offended by the description of the students in Langdon’s Harvard courses who, upon the introduction of the Golden Ratio, act like five-year-olds who have been given bright new toys to play with. Come on, Mr. Brown, give us some credit :p.

Aside from that insult to the intelligence of college students everywhere, the book is enjoyable, but I don’t really understand the hype surrounding it. However well-created and interesting the overlying concepts and plot may be, the details need work. I especially note the dialogues between characters need work. Real people simply do not talk like that. I would also like to know exactly how Sophie had time to create that message on her answering machine when she was supposed to be in such a hurry to reach Langdon before he got arrested. Also, why are so many people involved in these conspiracies when the very existence of these conspiracies are supposed to be such big secrets? It’s the details like that that mar what could have been an excellent book, instead of simply a good book.

A story about "Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1)"

Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1)

by Robin Hobb

Hobb creates an interesting world here. A kind of telepathy known simply as the Skill was once quite common among the people of the Six Duchies, but once the near-constant wars settled down, the Skill was no longer needed by the royalty and battle commanders to guide their troops. It fell into disuse and was taught only to naturally apt members of the royal line. Then, the King-in-Waiting, Chivalry, has a bastard son. The boy’s existence is unheard of until he is brought to the king, Shrewd (members of the royalty are given names such as this in accordance with an ancient, but now defunct, belief that a child is shaped by his or her name). Once he learns of the boy’s existence, Chivalry abdicates his chance at the throne in order to maintain the honor of his family and people. The boy is then trained to become King Shrewd’s assassin.

This is quite good. Not the best book I have ever read, but it captured my interest. I believe this is Hobb’s first book, so I look forward to catching up on what she has written to date.
