A review of "The Day After Tomorrow (Widescreen Edition)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read a review of this film before seeing it that described the movie as “bad in a way only $150 million dollar can be bad,” and I’d have to agree. Far fetched, at times outlandish, but I enjoyed looking at Jake Gyllenhall, even if he made the bad decision of burning books instead of all those hardwood tables and chairs in the library. I mean really – paper over wood? Give me a break! Still, in the end, it was a great mind-numbing way to pass a couple of hours. I was definitely entertained.

What a waste — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This was such a disappointment! Ocean’s 11 was clever and had wonderful twists to the plot. Oceans 12 was a waste of an excellent cast. It lost me completely 45 minutes into the film, I couldn’t make myself finish it.

A story about "Ray (Widescreen Edition)" — 3 years ago

Jamie Foxx was a seamless and believeable Ray Charles, but at times the film felt disjointed. The storyline felt jerky and could be perceived as difficult to follow for people who don’t know the moving story of Ray Charles’ life.

A story about "The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (Perennial Classics)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book brought back some childhood memories of sitting in church basements watching slides the missionaries would bring in of their time in the mission fields. These were always strange, somewhat detached folks in clothing that wasn’t quite mainstream with unusual languages rolling off their tongue trying to breathe life into their stories and make them real to those of us sitting in folding chairs, wearing our Sunday clothes, and distracted by the smell of coffee brewing.

I left the rigors of the church years ago, and reveled in the disenchantment the characters experienced as their well intentioned father came unglued while rying to force 500 years of change on people who didn’t give a flying frog fart about his god or his rules. It’s a glorious story.

A story about "Prodigal Summer: A Novel" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is one of my favorite books; I reread it at least once a year, and each time it moves me. I think about it often, relate to the characters, and love the way Kingsolver weaves in the natural world that so many of us ignore in our daily lives.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I found the book helpful, despite Goldberg’s personal oddities. But maybe that is what it takes to succeed as a poet in Minnesota.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A delightful and uplifting work. Adds a little sunshine where you need it without being preachy.

A story about "Ya-Yas in Bloom: A Novel" — 3 years ago

Wells seems to have pushed the Ya-Ya franchise a bit far with this latest addition. The stories paled in comparison to the other books, and it reads like the author has been through some expensive and extensive therapy. It was a kinder, gentler Ya-Yas, and I’m not sure I liked that. It was a fast, entertaining read, but lacked the spark of the other books.

A story about "The Bird Man and the Lap Dancer : Close Encounters with Strangers" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My two favorite stories in here were about the Bird Man and spending time in Calcutta working in Mother Theresa’s charity. A good read.
