The appendix is the best part — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I am quite fond of this book’s appendix. It includes a bunch of wonderful quotes (for example, “The space bar is not a design tool.”), as well as proofreader’s marks and some other useful stuff. However, the book itself isn’t all that useful. The writing is actually quite good, but it’s too verbose and strays away from the point of imparting useful information.

I'm not sold, yet — 3 years ago

My mom and step-dad really love these books, as do many others. I was put off initially by the silly title, but it turns out that it’s just a language thing since the book is set in Botswana. The characters in the book are good, but this book is undirected and the mysteries that this private detective solves aren’t that interesting to me. However, I have a feeling that the later books in the series may have more developed plots since they’ll have less set-up to do. Not sure if I’ll read the next one or not. They are well written.

Impactful — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I finally watched this movie today (thanks to Showtime + Tivo). It is very well done and packs in a lot of meaning, though it’s not an entirely pleasant film. I would say that this movie is about stereotypes, prejudice, racism, and xenophobia, as played out in Los Angeles. It looks at car crashes as a way to connect disparate lives in the city.

A story about "Cage of Stars" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I just reread this book because I saw the audio version of it at the library and I really liked it the first time. It wasn’t as good this time (though not bad) and I am not sure if it’s because it was my second time or because it was wasn’t as good as an audio book. I suspect the latter, but I’m interested in others’ opinions.

Why I gave up consuming "Pug Hill" — 3 years ago

I’ve already renewed this book at the library at least twice so I need to take it back now. I read the first 35 pages when we were at Lake Wenatchee, but it didn’t suck me in. I would read it if it were available as an audio book, but I can’t be bothered to sit still long enough to consume the paper version right now. Maybe I will try again another time.

Too slow — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This book was too slow and uneventful for me. The series of events that does happen is supposed to have all sorts of drama and meaning and a deep impact on the people’s lives, but it just wasn’t enough for me. Although the events would certainly be upsetting and life changing, the effects were pretty expected and self-explanatory so the long ramblings on the subject weren’t of that much interest to me.

Good Bond flick, rougher than usual — 3 years ago

I’m no Bond aficionado, but I’ve seen the recent ones at least and bits and pieces of the old ones. I thought this latest Bond flick was in the mold, but the violence was much more up close and personal. We’re talking torture and drowning instead of bloodless gun shots. Perhaps it’s the modern era. Despite this, it is a well done film and worth seeing if you like 007.

Good show, sad it ended — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I thought this was a good show and that the second season was pretty much as good as the first. It’s worth watching if you liked the first season. I think it’s even on DVD now.

Words of wisdom for dog owners — 3 years ago

Yes, I am part of the Cesar Millan cult. I think I’ve now seen all of season 1 of the show (and season 2), but I have watched it all out of order as reruns so I can’t be 100% certain. But regardless of that, I think the show is great and I highly recommend it. I think that Cesar’s methods work great for a lot of things, and can be combined with positive reinforcement and clicker training for puppies and obedience skills.
