Awful, so totally worth watching (rated 1 star)

Battlefield Earth

There are a bunch of movies that are trainwrecks out there, but I think this one takes the cake and that’s why it’s so enjoyable. It’s not bad just because of a bad story, but it’s bad because of constant hammy acting, bad dialogue, bad costume, bad editing (I mean, WTF was up with that “curtain” fade they did for every scene changed), bad direction, bad special effects. It’s not one of those bad movies that is just bad and not entertaining for it’s overwhelming lack of talent. There is plenty of fodder for your MST3K nights.

A story about "How It Ends"

It will be fantastic!

Long trudge to greatness (rated 4 stars)

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)

by George R.R. Martin

Most people talk about this book taking a few chapters to get into, but it took me 500 pages. However, once you hit a point (mine was a little man getting cocky), you’re hooked. Additionally, I’ve never read any fantasy before, except for tidbits of The Once and Future King. My main complaints are that Martin is overly verbose and the pacing ofting falters. Some characters are duds (Bran, Sansa at first), some aren’t (Tyrion, Arya, Daenerys), but when you are captivated by one it’s irritating to wait 100 pages to find out more while Bran ponders life on his horse.

Although Martin is verbose, once he gets going it truly is a captivating piece of work with (mostly) well-drawn characters.

Not Rabbit, Run (rated 3 stars)

Watership Down

by Richard Adams

Just keep this in mind while you’re reading: Yes, the rabbits are an allegory, but they’re still rabbits. Are you ready for 480 pages reading about rabbits? And no, I’m not talking about Updike Rabbits cause those are more entertaining.

I very tentatively recommend this, but the younger and less cynical the more enjoyment I assume someone will find. I’m 22 and very cynical, but my 16 year old sister loved it (though she’s also very cynical).
