A story about "A Modern Utopia" — 1 year ago

I read this for the paper I was working on. I Do like Wells tremendously, but I just can’t get into the idea of Utopia as a way of life. I don’t know from reading this book if Wells actually was as into it as a way of life with the conviction that many people have assumed he had. My younger brother Jerry said something about it recently that really made sense to me. “As cliche as the concept has become over the last century, Wells felt that any utopia should be held as a goal to be sought rather than attained.” He’s been studying and reading Wells in much more depth than I, and though this doesn’t neccessarily induce me to believe everything that he believes he’s pretty reliable for a good solid opinion and/or analysis of Wells’ more opaque passages. Wells is pretty well known to be a bit wordy.

A story about "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Great book! I loved the setting – Sitka, Alaska – and that the vast majority of characters were Jewish.

Why I gave up consuming "The Engines of God" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m not giving up, just putting it on hold, like the Egyptologist. Next semester starts in a week, and I don’t want to get into the middle of something I’ve been looking forward to that I can’t finish right away.

A story about "Reign of Fire (Part 2 of Lear's Daughters)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The Lear’s Daughters duology – of which this book is the second – has been some of the best written and original sci-fi I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Margaret Kellogg is phenominal with characterization. Most of the books I’ve read lately have the same cardboard cutout archetypes multiplied throughout the story – not this one! The NASA fellow who assisted her on the well-done hard science is also to be applauded with equal praise.

A story about "The Ruins" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve owned the book that this movie comes from for over a year, but havn’t read it yet. If I remember right, the author is usually fairly decent. I can only suppose that the book is better than the movie, as is typically the case, though I thought the movie was well done when viewed as a story in the venue of Lovecraft. Maybe I’ll read the book next summer.

A story about "Dangerous Games" — 1 year ago

The one I’m reading has a different cover than this. The one I have is the original old paperback edition that came out in 1980. If I can find the cover I have, I’ll post it.

Why I recommend "The Skinner" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is one of the best science fiction works I’ve read in the past 10 years. It has everything you might want – a mixture of both space opera and hard sci-fi. The characters were awesome and the storyline just carried me right along. The ending was really tied up nice as well. I recommend this to any sci-fi fan!

A story about "The Wicker Man" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

OMG! This movie was crazy! If you are any kind of fan of Christopher Lee at all you have to watch this. Do Not watch it with kids in the room! The dang thing’s almost a musical…

A story about "Star Trek Deep Space Nine - The Complete Seventh Season" — 1 year ago

The last few episodes were really pretty disappointing. I guess I was hoping for a lot better, though I don’t know exactly what form I wanted that to take.
