A story about "The Runaway" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I kind of came into this film towards the middle and lost a lot of ground, so I went and rented the flick, and was impressed; Two boys, one black and one white were born on the very same day; Despite the differences and the times(1930s-1940s), the boys grow close; By the time the film starts 1948-1949, things heat up. A new sheriff is in town; This one a young fella who has been to World War 2, and wants to change things; this is where the two boys come in; A murder trial comes into being; a young pregnant black girl and you have a mix that gets tight; Very interesting movie.

A story about "A Streetcar Named Desire (Two-Disc Special Edition)" — 3 years ago

This film just oozes of sex, fragility and brutality from the get go; Blanche Dubois(played so fragily by Vivien Leigh), goes to New Orleans to see her sister Stella, who is married to an ex Marine named Stanley Kowalski(Marlon Brando).I used to watch this movie from a child until now and it is only now that I get the picture.

A story about "The Coal Miner's Daughter" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I remember reading this book as a child over 30 years ago; During the 60s and 70s, Loretta Lynn was the reigning Queen of Country. In my book, she is still one and I remember when she and her late husband Doolittle would do the Crisco commercials around the 80s, 90s; I would get a kick out of it; I really enjoyed this book because this was a pure and simple woman from a pure and simple beginning who married at a real young age, but despite her beginnings, she rose to become a star. Highly recommended; One thing I remember about the book is the fact that when she mentioned the other stars, she was classy enough to speak well of them; A classy lady even till now.

WORTH CONSUMING!

From the time I have read about how this man has had to stare at a refrigerator as a child because his stepmother didn’t want he or his brother to open it still remains a poignant and profound thought to me; I cannot comprehend it; but the whole auto is superb.

A story about "Uncle Buck" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Back in the late 80s, the late John Candy was one of the funniest fellas around; When he died back in 1994, he left a void; but Uncle Buck is still one of the funniest movies around; My favorite scene is when he takes his nieces and nephew to school and the car he drives in is on it’s last legs;the kids are like, well our reps are ruined, everybody’s looking; the scene itself would have you laughing;

A story about "The Sweeter The Juice - A Family Memoir In Black And White" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the saddest books I ever read right here; another story on race and most particularly color; A man and woman married; the man was light enough to pass; the woman was dark; the man was of mixed heritage. They had a set of children; One, a little girl who was light enough, but not enough to pass for white; Well, once the mother died, those who could, left, and the little girl was brought up by other people and rejected by her siblings due to the simple fact that she wasn’t light enough and would expose them; this happened in the early 1900s(1910s-1930s); she even tried to reach out to them by getting in contact with them to connect with them but they wouldn’t reach out to her to keep their secret in tact; It was only after 75 years that the sister would reach out to her youngest sister and get reacquainted; both of them grandmothers and all. what a story. Highly recommended.

A story about "The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The first time I read this book, I just felt a little something inside feel for this woman; Here you have a Jewish woman born in Poland; her father and mother came to the U.S. to Virginia and started a neighborhood store there; the father is unyielding and merciless due to him failing as a rabbi; the mother longsuffering; since they live around blacks, Rachel becomes attracted to black men; After leaving home twice; once due to her being tired of her father’s ways, she returned to help her mother who was ailing, but left again to marry her first husband and bear him seven children; he was hard working and even started a church that is still in existence to this day; after she bore the author in 1957, he dies, and several months later, she meets another gentleman who marries her with the kids and gives her five more children; Despite of the hardship and differences(her family turn their backs on her when she married the first husband), she still raises a fine group of kids who did well despite of the odds; It will make ou cry, it will make you want to ask why? it will even make you wonder how far we have come in race relations today; either way it goes, it’s a great book to the testament of Rachel Shilksy McBride Jordan; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

When I first got this cd a few years back, I was a bit thrown back; to be honest, this is the where fusion began; a bit away from my tastes but definitely not to be ignored.

A story about "What's Goin' On(single)" — 3 years ago

I was eight years old when this remarkable song(and album)came out; It was so hip, so fresh and so in tune with the times that it was an instant hit; Even now thirty something years later, I sit and listen to it and remember the good times, I remember Marvin and what he was trying to say through this song as well as his life. One of the most profound and remarkable songs of the 70s.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Slowly but surely, this is becoming a favorite book; It’s about a woman who was wrongly imprisoned for 15 years; (shades of Life here), and thanks to the efforts of a few, Monette Victor is released and sent to a group home. So far so good; I am really feeling and enjoying this book;
