Hmmm... — 1 year ago

The film was technically well-made, but it really didn’t capture the tone of the book. The book is dark satire, but the movie came across as a pure tragedy. Very little of the humor of the book shone through.

Fallacies abound, but it's entertaining — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I like Morgan Spurlock. I thought his film (SuperSizeMe) was superbly entertaining. But, entertaining isn’t what he was going for, I don’t think, at least not entirely. What bothered me is that he was entirely unclear about his actual goal with this 30 day McDonald’s only experiment. In one place, he derides another writer who lost weight eating only McDonald’s, because she “did what no one else in America does: ate less and exercised”. Okay, so would he be okay with McD’s if people just didnt’ gorge on it and walked a bit? My issue with McD’s is that it’s just not food that’s meant to be consumed, really. Additives, preservatives, artificial flavorings…. that is not real food. So, losing weight isn’t the issue, health is. But I think Spurlock failed to make that distinction clear in both the book and the movie. If he had eaten a normal amount of McFood and walked as usual, and still had bad health effects, he would have made a much more powerful statement.
