Why I recommend "Kontroll" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This film was fantastic. I don’t usually rave on about films but I just loved this. Independent debut – must find out more from this director/writer

Why I recommend "Burning Boats" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is my favourite Pressgang album. Great to dance to if you like folk rock.

Why I recommend "Five Letters from an Eastern Empire (Penguin 60s)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This short book has so much imagination in it. I wasn’t sure about it when I started but by the end I wished that there was more.

This will certainly be one of those books that I think about from time to time and am likely to re-read (after a suitable time has passed).

How "The Mount People" changed my life — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Well perhaps “changed my life” is a little dramatic but it’s made a little difference for sure.

This book gives a unique insight into the lives of the people who lived and worked on St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, England.

I was recommended this book as someone who had seen my family tree recognised one of the families as being listed in the book.

From opening it I managed to find my 8th and 9th great grandparents and siblings of my 7th and 8th great grandfathers in just a few minutes.

Wow what a treasure trove :)

A story about "flatland" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Flatland is a two-dimensional universe occupied by living geometric figures – squares, triangles, circles, etc. A Square, Attorney At Law, finds himself in the middle of two upheavals: the rise of martial law by the circular leadership of Flatland, and the arrival of A Sphere, CEO Of Messiah, Incorporated, a creature from a hitherto-unknown third dimensional world.

A must for all who have read the book (but may be a little confusing to start with for those who haven’t).

A story about "Das Beste Von Daf" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Got given an advance copy of this CD. Looking forward to seeing them live this weekend – will be a first for me. Have been listening to them for over 17 years now.

Was not expecting to like this — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Watched it with my mum on Christmas day (not much choice as I bought it for her) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Perhaps if it were any other day then it may have been different – it was an easy to watch chick flick.

Why I recommend "Splitting Heirs" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed watching Splitting Heirs again. I don’t remember this film getting a cinema release (I was a skint student when this was released and couldn’t afford to go to the cinema very often) but found it in a video rental shop about 10 years ago.

It is not rude or crude and the only violence is mild comedic violence. There are British and American actors in this and something from both cultures is combined to make this film funny.

It is a great escapist film (it bears absolutely nothing to do with my real life!) *with the best of English black comedy. *

Not their best but good — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I prefer the creativity and originality of Origins of Symmetry but this is still a good listen.

Why I recommend "Man Who Loved Only Numbers :ERDOS" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This man was dedicated and knew only how to function when he was doing maths. He was kind and caring but had trouble communicating with people on levels other than maths, yet has influenced and touched more modern mathematicians than perhaps any other.

He was publishing actively until he died 10 years ago aged 83 when he was still working 19 hour days on theories and papers. He would encourage other mathematicians and pose puzzles and was never greedy with fame or recognition.

Published mathematicians now have an ERDOS (pronounced air-dish) number which is the degree of separation between their article and the great man himself – a joint paper with Erdos has an Erdos number of 1, a paper with someone who has an Erdos number of 1 but if you haven’t published with Erdos gives you an Erdos number of 2, etc.

He’s that important.

And interesting.

Very highly recommended reading.
