A story about "Hatchet (Unrated Director's Cut)" — 47 weeks ago

If this was a parody of horror films I’d say it was good. If it was a B-movie horror movie, I’d say it was decent. If it was a straight horror film I’d say it was pretty darn awful. The problem is that I could not really figure that out.
The only part that was not completely predictable in this movie was the last two minutes.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This film really won me over. The scenery and colors throughout the film were amazing. The train setting is creative. And the topic is timely in the age of Oprah.

It did have somewhat of a cartoony feel to me, but I found that aspect kind of fun in itself. Sure, the characters are not really ones you can sympathize with, we only get to know them on a surface level, and some of the dialogue is completely ridiculous, but those things are forgivable in this instance.

Also, I love what the film is saying too about going to India to have a purposeful “spiritual experience” because I think there are lots of people in real life who are also that misguided.

WORTH CONSUMING!

While I love Will Ferrell’s movies I also love Tina Fey and hope she does more. (Their approach to comedy is completely different, but they are the two best thing to come out of SNL in a long time.)

For this film, there was not a lot of laugh out loud moments, but it was a smart and witty comedy—something wonderful to find in a genre that typically goes more for slap stick and fart jokes.

A story about "Cellular (New Line Platinum Series)" — 51 weeks ago

Pretty far fetched and Kim Bassinger was just not believable in this one. Macy was the best part and some of the songs were decent.

Sort of reminded me of Phone Booth only turned inside out.

WORTH CONSUMING!

So different than pop culture concepts of the same story! Amazing on so many levels…Perhaps not something the less mature and/or erudite can identify with or understand (as evidenced below) but it deserves all the praise it gets.

A story about "Carnivale - The Complete Second Season" — 1 year ago

Thought it was great right up until the last 10 minutes of the last episode. They must have meant this for a season finale instead of a series finale. Right? It would just be wrong to end a show that way intentionally…

WORTH CONSUMING!

This started off really slowly. I had to force myself to watch the first two episodes. But by the last four episodes, I was completely hooked. I can’t wait to see the second season. I wonder if anything will get resolved or wrapped up though.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Robert Downey Jr pretty much steals the show on this one. Just a terrific performance. Sadly, the film would have been much stronger if a a couple of things had been changed: 1) if Jack Black’s character had been played pretty much by anyone else 2) if Ben Stiller had not been, as usual, too over the top here when he needed to be more subtle.

Tom Cruise does a great job at playing a jerk, but he just creeps me out. The part with Cruise dancing in front of Matthew McConaughey was hilarious for the look on McConaughey’s face though. The last solo dance scene Cruise did just left me thinking “Is everyone laughing at this guy and he’s the only one who doesn’t seem to get it?”

Overall, some wonderful social commentary, some very funny moments, and a few things that fall flat. As comedies and parodies go though I would definitely recommend it.

A story about "Lost In Place: Growing Up Absurd in Suburbia" — 1 year ago

Most people who read this book love it. I just wasn’t so impressed. It was definitely an easy read and if you are looking for a light memoir you can finish in a few hours, I would even recommend this one.
But what I look for in a memoir is a story that goes somewhere, where the author learns a lesson and is better for it. This recounting is just a guy telling stories. It didn’t really seem to have a point and the ending is a big let down. But perhaps I just expected too much…

WORTH CONSUMING!

Enjoyed this being a bit different. Twelve episodes in all, so doesn’t take a long time to get through. Two episodes stand out as being really good social commentary as well: Bret Gives Up the Dream and Girlfriends. Otherwise, pretty light stuff. The last couple of episodes are a bit sad though. I am hoping there will be a second season but I have no idea…
