A story about "Defiance [Theatrical Release]" — 4 days ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The whole war genre is something I usually stay very far away from. But I was offered free tickets to a preview of this film, so I went with some friends. Although I have seen few war movies, this is definitely my favorite. Well worthwhile!

WORTH CONSUMING!

What’s great about this film is that it takes a very far-fetched scenario and somehow makes you feel like it could happen.

Also, I like when a movie throws in something so bizarre you’re sure you’ve never that seen before and you doubt you ever will again. For this film it was (how to describe it)...puppet rape.

A story about "Baxter" — 1 week ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Interestingly, the boy in this movie is way more disturbing than the dog. Baxter is misunderstood by humans and he is, in turn, confused by them. But as a viewer I never got the impression that the dog was evil.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A very beautiful film. Loved the contrasts between innocence/make believe and reality.

A story about "Fallen" — 2 weeks ago

While I didn’t find the movie all that scary, I do have a creepy association with the song “Time is on My Side.”

Still. And I’m even sure how many years ago I saw this movie…

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie was a running-from-the-cops type of movie with some artsy overtones.

And while it wasn’t a romantic film, there was a “love” story—although somewhat of a dysfunctional one.

I know this wasn’t the point of the movie, but I keep thinking that if that was the way your parents met, you’d have like the best story ever to tell your kids.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A lot of this movie’s criticism is that it is “slow” and not very “gory.” But horror movies don’t have to be fast-paced and mind-numbingly gruesome to be good. Perhaps it’s just our collective loss of our attention spans…

The suspense was very-well built. The sounds effects were great, and I loved how sometimes the camera was from the perspective of the killer but not always, so it gave a kind of off-kilter feeling over all.

I’m a little curious about the remake, but it probably did away with all the things that made this movie interesting.

A story about "The Lottery: And Other Stories" — 2 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Jackson is one of my all time favorite authors.

She is so good at evoking a creepy feeling, so good at making ordinary things utterly disturbing.

One of the things that make her stories so creepy is that we’ve all met people like the people in her stories. Or we’ve been in situations where we weren’t sure if we were interpreting the other person’s actions/motives correctly.

There are 26 stories in the collection. Of them, Seven Types of Ambiguity, is hands down one of the most haunting short stories out there. Not as dramatic as The Lottery but just as powerful.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This album isn’t usually a big favorite with fans, but I have always liked it a lot. When I’m in a particular mood-sort of melancholy and reflective-I can put this on and it hits the spot like it’s the musical version of comfort food.

A story about "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" — 2 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen scenes from this movie but I never sat down an watched it from beginning to end until last night.

So, it is cheesy and campy, but it’s also one of the most fun vampire movies ever.

And it had an impact on the horror genre—even if you can’t really call this movie horror. After this movie you started seeing stronger female roles where before women always ran up the stairs and usually managed to twist their ankles in the process…
