Immerses you in the world of tribal Amazonians people, scientific and mystic at the same time. Have read it dozens of times – and even tried to recommend it to Terence McKenna (who very gently pointed out that Mr. Plotkin was a friend of his!)

I laughed so hard I’m sure I dislocated something.
My second Quammen book, after Song of the Dodo. Its less technical than the other – which is disappointing, but its a good narration and provides a lot of viewpoints, and the issues associated with maintaining predation populations.
great book, but at some point towards the end, I put it down for too long, lost the thread and never picked it up again.
Almost bourgeoise more like it.
Some mutually similar experiences, but overall her preoccupations about France (moreso Paris) and trying to fit in to French life were a bit superficial, I don’t think she captured anything like the Peter Mayle deadpan comic style that better captures the French character.
mystery story from an interesting pov, I found the reading rhythm a little awkward, but at the same time it aptly frames the mental processes behind the narration.
