And it took a decently long time to read, which is great for anyone who reads books way too fast

It stayed mostly very faithful to the book (apart from the frequent flashbacks to his father…). I loved the oompa loopahs, the song and dance routines were just hilarious. But I think Burton went too far in trying to make them seem as small as possible – they seemed to change proportion all the time, and the bluescreening was just way too obvious (he could’ve learned some lessons from Peter Jackson, who made his normal men sized hobbits ‘work’ much better). Charlies family characters were well acted, and the horrible children were all suitably awful.

It was less complex than wicked, but had a much more gritty and ugly reality as he set it in a defitite time and place in our own history (the history of the Dutch tulip craze is also interesting – try ‘the tulip, the story of the flower than has made men mad’)
