The House of Mirth (Dover Thrift Editions)

The House of Mirth is my very favorite Edith Wharton novel and one of my most favorite books of all time. Having read her biography, I can see a lot of Wharton in Lily, the main character, and Wharton’s struggle against the role women played in early 20th century New York society. Although the story is of a certain time and offensive references to a Jewish man date the book, Lily’s battle as a woman who was “brought up to be ornamental” but wants to be so much more than her friends and peers will allow is a struggle that I think is still relatable.

I think I am the only person in the world who did not fall in love with this book. It certainly had some interesting parts, but I got really sick of the main character’s heavyhanded metaphors, cheeky parenthetical references and long, tangential rememberances of her blowhard father’s lectures during action scenes. This book could have been much better with a thorough editor slashing a good chunk of that academic babble with a big red Sharpie. I think there’s a good story in here but it’s hidden amongst all the extra, confusing filler and cutsey devices.

The Year of Yes

I was excited about the premise of this book-~~a woman, unlucky in love, decides to say yes to every man who asks her on a date, hoping to find the man of her dreams amongst the dudes she would normally dismiss~~-until I figured out that she was only 21 when she did this experiment. Her bitterness and desperatness to find Mister Right rang a little false. I mean, come on girl, you are 21 and living in New York. First of all, 21 is pretty much the Year of Yes for everyone! We all are less guarded and more willing to take risks and date stupid crazy men. I think it would have been more interesting if she was 30, had been on the dating scene for awhile and had a lot more walls built up. Then I think the book would be more about how her own life and perceptions changed, rather than a laundry list of bad dates. Also, why was she so hell bent on finding a man at that age anyway? I had a hard time sympathizing; instead, I kind of wanted to shake her. But the book had funny moments too I guess.

The ending is yawningly predictable; don’t read the author bio at the end where it says who her husband is or you’ll figure it out right away.

The Year of Magical Thinking

This book is incredibly powerful and moving. I suppose it’s a little self indulgent but absorbingly so. I love these sorts of tragic writerly love stories for some reason. If you liked this book I highly recommend The Best Day the Worst Day: Life with Jane Kenyon by Donald Hall. But you might want to give yourself a bit of time between reads because The Best Day the Worst Day is similarly heart-wrenching.

TV Party

I love all romanticized depictions of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s NYC art scene so this film was right up my alley. It also made me kind of miss the strange local television shows that would play late at night when I was in middle school, like Bombshelter Videos and the Spud Goodman show. There was another video show too but I can’t remember the name, although I do remember staying up to watch it in a fevered state, desperate to see any music video I could in my MTV-less existance. Whatever happened to local television? Sad.

Everyone should buy one of these damn scarves. They are so great! They are super soft and come in tons of colors. I know my money for this scarf goes into the pocket of that creepily-sideburned pervert and now he can spend it on plying barely legal girls with champagne so they’ll “model” for him but I still love it. My consumer satisfaction level with this product is an 11.
