Yesterday I spent the day with friends. We went letter boxing and bowling and generally had a wonderful day. We also had some great food. I was introduced to finadene – an amazing combination of onions soy sauce vinegar and chili pepper. It is a condiment from Guam.

Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher, No. 12)

Jack Reacher is an a great character – a lone wolf who roams the world with nothing but the clothes on his back and years of specialized military training. In this book – the 12th in the series and the 1st I ever read – he hitchhikes through Colorado and gets trapped in a town called Despair. Everyone is secretive and he is clearly not wanted and that just piques Jack’s curiousity.

Fast paced, interesting and mysterious – Lee Child has a good formula. I will read lots more of Reacher’s adventures.

So faithful to the book and perfectly cast. Even though I read all 3 books and knew the story, the movie kept my interest and kept me on the edge of my seat. Be warned that it is very violent and some terrible things happen. The word is that there will be an English language/Hollywood remake which is completely unnecessary since they got it right with this one.

Date Night

My expectations were low and I was actually lured to the theater with the promise of popcorn. The premise of the movie seemed tired and although I like both leads I figured (incorrectly) that it would be Michael Scott married to Liz Lemon – it was not.

There were lots of funny moments that were not disclosed in the previews and who doesn’t enjoy a shirtless Mark Wahlberg? I laughed a ton, got my popcorn and apologized for my preconceived notions.

Midwives (Oprah's Book Club)

Despite my normal reservations about reading anything on Oprah’s Book Club list due to the death and tradegy theme that pervades, I found myself stuck sleeping at my sister’s house due to a power outage at mine and between books! Her book shelves held various choices – most of which I had already read and some of which I had no interest. This and the fact that she sleeps late is how I ended up reading Midwives this morning.

Chris Bohjalian is a talented writer. The story holds your interest and the characters capture your feelings.

The Help

What a beautiful book. The author said it best herself “Wasn’t that the point of the book? For women to realize, We are two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I’d thought.”

The story is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s and is told from the point of view of 2 black women and 1 white woman – all about race relations and family life. It was engrossing and compelling and real.

Based on but not faithful to the book (rated 4 stars)

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief [Blu-ray]

Tonight after dinner my sister, her husband, their 2 kids ages 8 and 9, my other sister and my mom headed out to see this movie. It is based on the first book in an excellent series by Rick Riordan. The whole family read it and the 4 books that followed.

The movie was fun and fast paced but not very failthful to the book. The gist was there but my youngest niece was disappointed at some of the stuff that hit the cutting room floor.

Still – we all gave it a positive review and it was fun to be out together late for a treat! Be sure to sit through the credits for a surprise ending.

Tube is better than tub (rated 5 stars)

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm

This is excellent lip balm – moisturizing with great flavor – bright and pepperminty – it is almost a dual purpose breath freshener.

As invormation says below, the tub version is difficult to open and I end up scraping some out because just rubbing doesn’t get any product.
