A story about "Tricky Business" — 6 days ago

This book is on the bedside table inthe room that I inhabit when I visit my friends in Keene. So I am reading it visit by visit. It is enjoyable – very Dave Barry – and easy to pick up and begin again – even weeks apart.

Bone to Ashes by Kathy Reichs - 10th in a Series — 6 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Forensic anthropologist Temperance “Tempe” Brennan is back again in Kathy Reich’s most recent work. The main character is flawed but making an effort and her life is interwoven in the mystery in every book. Since she deals with death in her job, the books all have their gruesome aspects. I like that fact that she moves between North Carolina & Montreal and injects little bits of French Canadian as well as local history.

WORTH CONSUMING!

True of the first and true of this one – the kids love it and the songs are catchy.

Why I recommend "High School Musical" — 6 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This weekend I had my 2 nieces – aged 6 and almost 8 – and this is one of their favorites so we had to watch it. They were so enthusiastic that I have to give it a “Worth Watching” – especially if you are a girl under 10 years old.

It is very clean and sweet. The songs are catchy and fun. The kids LOVE it and I didn’t hate it.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This was an early effort by Ian Rankin but Miles Flint is no John Rebus.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I forgot about this collection of short stories by Roald Dahl until I saw it on someone else’s Recent Consumption list. I guess I can’t really say I forgot because once you have read any Dahl – especially these stories for adults – they are impossible to forget. Some are haunting, some are funny, some are erotic and some are horribly chilling.

A story about "The Diamond in the Window (The Hall Family Chronicles)" — 11 weeks ago

Ended up skimming this to the end because it was a library book that my sister had to return. She was lukewarm about it when she handed it to me, but I was hopeful to prove her wrong. However, this book for children just does not deliver.

Jane Langton writes about places she knows. This series is set in Concord Massachusetts and includes historical facts about local figures like Henry David Thoreau and Louisa May Alcott and local places like Walden Pond and houses that still grace the center of town. I have read and liked parts of her Homer Kelly series (for adults) set in the same place.

This one was just a bit too far fetched and drwan out. I could see that she was trying to set up a mystery and teach some history but I could not get into it. My sister and I were both reading it with an eye to whether we would read it with the kids. Neither of us could recommend.

A story about "Mo's Bacon Bar" — 14 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Um yeah – it is a chocolate bar with bacon in it.

Um yeah – I realize that consuming it was against most laws of man and nature.

Un yeah – it was salty and smoky and sweet and sexy and scrumptious and…

Um yeah – I’d do it again.

Always great to discover a new (to me) series — 14 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Luanne Fogarty inherits the family home in the Florida swamps so she takes a sabbatical to fix things up and gets embroiled in a mystery.

Luanne is a good character – flawed and a bit troubled but intrepid and ready for a challenge. She is between boyfriends, weary of her job and at a crossroads and she knows the swamps inside and out. The local police call on her for her expertise in diving and things go from there.

We meet some good recurring characters such as the cranky police chief and Luanne’s elderly but feisty Cajun neighbor.

I was drawn to read this due to a review of Green Water Ghost – the 6th book in the series – by Mark. Great recommendation!

Now to figure out which one is next…

Why do items appear several different times? I already consumed this and reviewed it elsewhere
