Conflicted — 32 weeks ago

There were two major problems with this book for me. First, I really am not a fan of Elizabeth Gilbert’s writing style. It’s a bit self-absorbed and self-consciously postured, and though this book is not about her, she goes into these tangents regarding her own personality, taste in men, etc, that I find very annoying. Problem #2 is that Eustace Conway is a deeply flawed, self-righteous individual himself. Yet, even despite of disliking both the author and her subject, I found Conway’s story incredibly interesting.

Why I recommend "The Silver Spoon" — 42 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is, in my opinion, the best cookbook I have come across. Beautifully designed, expertly organized, covering every subject and ingredient imaginable (in Italian cooking at least). Find a dish by ingredient or type, or just browse and become despaired that you don’t have the time to make every single delicious recipe you’ll come across!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I just finished a whole bag of these in one sitting, and I don’t even feel guilty. They’re like Cheetos without the yuck!

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

In my opinion, this is the least engaging of all of Forster’s books. I was also quite young when I read them all, so maybe my opinion would be different now…

WORTH CONSUMING!

Beautiful hubris! Eggers has a style all his own, and I really enjoy reading what he has to say. Wonderful imagery that puts you exactly where he wants you to be. I think I was particulary hooked on this book because it took place in my ‘hood, so I did feel a certain attachment to all the places described.

Also, since it’s an Eggers book, it’s perfectly layed out and typeset (at least the hardcover is…). If you haven’t read all the publishing notes and copyright notices in the front of the book, do go back and read them… you’ll be in for a treat!
